Took a nasty spill skiing last week, felt something pop in my rib area. It didn't hurt. It didn't even really ache until later that night.

Woke up the next morning and it was achy, but nothing serious. It didn't hurt when I coughed, laughed, deep breath, nothing...just generally ached every now and then.

Here we are almost a week later and it's gotten worse. It's more sharp when I lift my left arm, and now, when I sneeze or cough. Breathing deeply still doesn't bother it too much. It feels like it's on my left front side, near where my ribs connect to my sternum. I guess I'm gonna have to go get some x-rays done.

Do y'all have any experience with broken ribs, torn muscles in that area, etc.? Any doctors on here, or anyone else that has some ideas?

Someone told me that if it were a broken rib I'd know because laughing, breathing deeply, coughing, sneezing, etc. would cause excruciating pain.

It depends which rib(s) you're talking about. I broke ribs 7 and 8 and since they are lower area ribs, it did cause immense pain for laughing, breathing, coughing, sneezing, etc. Where is the pain located?

dad broke a rib many years ago,it bothered the hell out of him for a long time, the pain would come and go,it does sound like a lot of what you are going through,i don't have any medical expertise, but if your asking about it on here, you probably should go to a doctor

especially since it was last week and seems to be getting worse

Probably a tumor. Most likely the fall knocked it loose and now it is caught between your heart and lungs. Give it a week and it will go away.

Put some Windex on it.

Seriously though, from what I know even if you broke the rib there's nothing they can do but put you on pain meds, tell you to take it easy, and wait for it to heal.

Whatever makes it hurt worse, stop doing that. :)

I guess you could develop blood poisoning if the fracture is severe enough. I'd at least go get it X rayed and find out if I needed to be on antibiotics.

I feel for you....

Injuries to the rib cage suck. I broke 3 ribs in a car accident, 2 were clean breaks that tore and collapsed my lung causing internal bleeding. That was a bad night…..

I got hooked by a Bull one time and cracked a couple of ribs and tore muscles in my rib cage. I could not turn, take a good breath or tie my shoes for a few months without extreme pain. Of course he stomped my shoulder pretty bad to, so I was a real mess for a while.

Grab you a quart of top shelf corn, gimp around enough to get the wife to feel sorry for you and look after you. Doctors are for girlie men… Unless you are spitting up blood you should be ok.

Later,
