it's simply outrageous that Exxon/Mobil pays only 30 billion/year in taxes, they should have to pay more, after all it's only fair...

does it really matter?

the top rate is the top rate, not everyone will be able to, or willing to, take advantage of any loopholes

It's usually the little guy who does not enjoy the loopholes.

What is the actual rate paid by the top five or ten (you pick the reasonable number) grossing US firms?

like I mentioned before, Exxon/Mobil pays over 30 billion/year

how much more should they pay when they already pay more than half of the US combined population?

How about lowering the rates and closing all the loopholes....novel idea, I know.

Corporate tax law....one of the many ways that big corporations controls government, while simultaneously fooling stupid people into thinking it's beneficial the US as a whole.

ExxonMobil claims they are paying around 145% on net earnings.

Go figure.

link

For every dollar of net earnings in the U.S. between 2006 and 2010, ExxonMobil incurred $1.45 in taxes to federal, state and local governments. When one looks at the total taxes incurred on ExxonMobil’s 2010 activities, they amounted to over $93 billion – more than three times our earnings. Over 24 percent of ExxonMobil’s revenue went to taxes around the world.

That's tax rate, not effective right? So the deductions are out which are pretty hefty for some. Exxonmobile paid 0% to the feds just a couple of years back, and 40% another to show that effective rates paint a different picture. I still think we are top 5 even for effective.

edit: started typing this post about 10 posts ago (work). looks like we've got it covered.

Ding ding ding... Average effective corporate tax rates show that the us is actually quite competitive. With coins in the right coffers, that is.

Having the highest rate and paying the highest rate are two different things.
