I just noticed that we currently have 5 DE's commited for the '10 recruiting class. I wonder if there are plans to convert any of these guys to either LB or DT? Current DE commits...

Jaques Smith
J.C. Copeland
Bruce Irvin
Corey Miller
Brandon Willis

Plus Delvin Jones, who is being recruited as an "athlete" also plays DE.

Bruce Irvin was never recruited as a defensive end. He was recruited as a Linebacker and that is where he will play next season at Tennessee.

Delvin Jones I think ends up at TE. He really wants to play offense.

I've also read that Willis projects as a DT.

He has the frame to where he could project at either DT or Strong Side End. I think the staff really likes the possibility of him being a strong-side run stopping end though.

I'll tell you this, I would not rule out Jacques Smith standing up in certain situations. The staff wants bigger linebackers who can run. He has a similar frame to both McClain and Hightower at Alabama. Lance Thompson prefers bigger LB's, Monte prefers bigger LB's...dont be surprised if it were to happen in some situations.

Walker, Williams, and Martin are all seriors next year
Sykes will be a JR or a SR

we need alot of DE's this year so that they can come in learn the system and not have a huge drop-off in 2011

Agree. DE = Huge need in this class.

Agree. DE = Huge need in this class.

Agreed...

I initially thought this class was all about the QB and OL...but we have serious needs at DE, DT, LB...not to mention the need for an overall upgrade in speed at the skill positions...

It seems like every day there is more evidence of just how far Fulmer ran our talent levels into the ground...

I hate to keep ragging on the guy but I'm just astonished by it

not a huge glaring need at LB..could use one or 2

King, askew, mitchell-thorton, nelson, and lathers are all freshman

The DE in HS can translate into multiple position on the college front. First of all, HS run a multitude of defenses, 4-3, 3-4, 3-5-3, 5-2, 6-2; therefore the type of athlete needed to play DE in HS defenses varies tremendously. I think that's why DEs today are so versitile and can play all over the field, LB, DT, TE, 3 Tech DE, speed rusher DE and so own. I think that's what UT is doing, let's get them here and sort it out, preferably in the Spring.

Fulmer left the program in terrible shape. I dont think anyone can argue with that.

There are glaring needs across the board at just about every position. LB, DE, DT, OL, QB...

It is going to show up on the field this year and next year especially.

When it comes to 2010 our only hope is that Kiffin's first two classes can fill those voids effectively...

People are going to compare Kiffin's 2nd year to Saban's 2nd year...and if it's not up to that level then the idiots are going to use it as proof that Kiffin was a bad hire...

The difference is that Saban had enough players left over at important positions (QB, OL, DL) and we'll be all but completely drained at those positions in 2010

I see two 7-6 seasons (with the bowl game) followed by a legit SEC title contender starting in 2011

We are still in it for Powell and Lemonier and we would take either if they wanted to come. Delvin Jones is our TE of the future.

The exact same thing can be said for the comparisons that people will make to his 2nd year at USC. Again, the BIG difference is that USC had Palmer and UA had Parker. We have Stephens or Bray. I have to believe we will pull another QB in this year's class.

Agree...but I would add that the returning OL's on those teams were just as important...

We're in big trouble at both positions next year

It will show this year and already is at OL in terms of depth, next year it will show in terms of youth across the board...2011 LOOK OUT!!!!

Our Defense will be absolutely dominanting next year. A lot of the starters will be back. And young talent will step in where others have left. Of course Berry will be a big hole to fill but I think we'll be alright there. I'm expecting some good things out of next year's team.
