My Way News - APNewsBreak: Obama seeks power to merge agencies

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama will ask Congress on Friday for greater power to shrink the federal government, and his first idea is merging six sprawling trade and commerce agencies whose overlapping programs can be baffling to businesses, a senior administration official told The Associated Press.

The deal would entitle him to an up-or-down vote from Congress in 90 days.

I applaud the idea but have a hard time believing this is simply about cutting waste or making life easier for businesses (simply because there is no precedent with this WH). I also wonder where the recommendations will come from on which agencies to merge. IMO it's a good idea just have to see how it is applied.

I did kinda laugh at this part

The administration official presented Obama as the CEO of an operation who should have more power to influence how it is designed.

and for you "Reagan conservatives"

According to the White House, presidents held such a reorganizational authority for about 50 years until it ran out during Reagan's presidency in 1984.

It came up in another thread. I can't believe this would only save $3 billion over 10 years.

well he wants to merge duplicated agencies but not get rid of any workers. So the agencies themselves are doing the same work but there are no people doing the same work? Doesn't seem possible

My company merged 3 business units into one and lots of the higher level jobs were cut.

Another article indicated about 2000 job eliminations via attrition.

It's a start but dang, less than one Solyndra a year has the same or bigger effect on the budget.

Current deficit 1,500 billion annually. Impact of this change .3 billion annually. (if I got my math right this time). Doesn't sound like they are doing it right :whistling:
