Here are 13 mildly interesting facts shown by the numbers hosted at Stats Active Career Leaders
1. Alabama has the number 5 ranked total defense in the FBS (9th passing yardage, 8th rushing, 1st scoring, 4th red zone).
2. Alabama gave up 10 points to Virginia Tech. VA Tech has the 110th ranked offense in the FBS (83d passing, 106th rushing, 95th scoring). Va Tech created these numbers playing Alabama (5th total defense), Western Carolina (unranked), Eastern Carolina (20th total defense), Marshall (10th total defense), Georgia Tech (13th total defense), North Carolina (106th total defense) and Pittsburgh (44th total defense). On average, these are reasonable defenses, but Va Tech does not look like a particularly dominant offense.
3. Alabama gave up 42 points to Texas A&M. Texas A&M has the 3d ranked total offense in the FBS (5th passing, 26th rushing, 4th scoring). They have generated these numbers playing Rice (66th total defense), Sam Houston State (unranked), Alabama (4th total defense), SMU (85th total defense), Arkansas (56th total defense), Ole Miss (63rd total defense) and Auburn (88th total defense). Other than Bama, Texas A&M has not played anyone who could stop my grandmother. A&M challenged Bama by having a mobile QB who could extend plays and allow coverages break down, I guess?
4. Alabama gave up 6 points to Colorado State. Colorado State has the 63rd ranked total offense in the FBS (58th passing, 59th rushing, 45th scoring). They have generated these numbers playing U. Denver (unranked), Tulsa (73rd total defense), Cal Poly (unranked), Alabama (4th total defense), UTEP (107th total defense), San Jose State (84th total defense) and Wyoming (95th total defense). Colorado State looks like a worse offensive team then their rank would even suggest; they have played a weak schedule other than Alabama.
5. Alabama gave up no points to Ole Miss. Ole Miss has the 46th ranked total offense in the FBS (36th passing, 58th rushing, 72nd scoring). Ole Miss has generated these numbers against Vanderbilt (36th total defense), Southeast Missouri State (unranked), Texas (90th total defense), Alabama (4th total defense), Auburn (88th total defense), TAMU (118th total defense), and LSU (43rd total defense). Ole Miss is clearly talented in places, but they are young and streaky.
6. Alabama gave up 3 points to Georgia State. Georgia State is reclassifying as a FCS school this season, and the NCAA is not keeping FCS statistics for them. I wouldn't look here for an analogy to UT.
7. Alabama gave up 7 points to Kentucky. Kentucky has the 100th ranked offense in the FCS (92d passing, 85th rushing, and 104th scoring). Kentucky put up these numbers against Western Kentucky (26 points against the 24th total defense), Miami (OH) (41 points against the 111th total defense), Louisville (13 points against the 3rd total defense), Florida (7 points against the 4th total defense), South Carolina (28 points against the 21st total defense) and Alabama (4th total defense). Kentucky sucks.
8. Alabama gave up 0 points to Arkansas. Arkansas has the 97th ranked total offense in the FCS (114th passing, 29th rushing, and 103d scoring). Arkansas put up these numbers on La-Lafayette, Samford, Southern Miss., Rutgers, TAMU, Florida, South Carolina and Alabama.
9. Alabama has the 35th ranked total offense in the FBS. They have beaten Virginia Tech (2d ranked total defense), Texas A&M (118th ranked total defense), Colorado St. (102d ranked total defense), Ole Miss (64th ranked total defense), Georgia St. (unranked defense), Kentucky (92d ranked total defense), and Arkansas (57th ranked total defense)
10. Tennessee has the 89th ranked total offense in the FBS, and the 75th ranked total defense in the FBS.
11. Tennessee has the 21st fewest penalties per game. Alabama is tied for 33. Tennessee has the 9th fewest penalty yards per game. Alabama is tied for 31.
12. Tennessee and Alabama are tied for 34th in turnover margin.
13. Alabama's one glaring statistical weakness seems to be punt return defense, where they are ranked 61st. This is wholly apart from their apparent weakness to mobile QBs, which is only evidenced by the one game.
These are the facts, my fellow Vols. Now argue their significance at your leisure.
