(I'll say first I was not at this game, this is just something a local sports writer said)

At halftime of the Oneida vs Cumberland Gap game they had homecoming festivities. Following the homecoming they did a tribute to the victims of 9/11 in the form of some local people singing America the Beautiful. The home team was then given a 15 yard penalty to open up the half for unsportsmanlike conduct for delaying the game.

It did not effect the game in anyway as the final score was something like 41-0, but still. I thought it was a bit shady on the referees part as well as the visiting team for not doing something to compensate for a rather unnecessary penalty.

Then again, there will be those who say if its in the rule book there are no extenuating circumstances.

I personally can see it both ways. Was curious what you all thought.

No different than the NFL fining players for showing their support. National pride is a forgotten concept in many ways.

The rule was established before the game started, so they knew they were asking for trouble. I have no problem with the tribute, but they could have EASILY made it fit. Such a tribute should garner adequate time for performance within the pre-established allotment.

The only reason they were penalized was because the halftime show was in excess of the allotted time. Not necessarily because they gave a tribute.
