I never thought I would say this, but Fulmer might get my support in two years.
Typically on a risky trick play like that you say "If it works he's a genius, if it doesn't he's an idiot". Even if that play had worked, you'd be scratching your head.
The staff and everyone knew going in that this was going to be a hard and tight game. You had 2 weeks to prepare and had no "money play" or anything different to try and pick up a key 1st down like the 3rd and short towards the end?
or at least be smart enough to have Marlin Lane in the game on the 3rd and short. Even Dooley was smart enough to use AJ Johnson on short yardage. We convert there our odds of winning the game go up tremendously. Everyone in the stadium knew exactly what was coming and Neal isn't a good short yardage back.
This game should have never hinged on a fake FG or overruled spot. There is a significant talent gap between UT and Vandy. Jones played as if he had the weaker roster when he didn't. He played not to lose against VANDY. That used to be Fulmer's mistake against top tier teams especially UF... he wouldn't take the chances you have to take to win.
