(1) Despite hiring a base running guru as assistant coach, our base running actually appears worse.

(2) Last season we started the season 3-0 against Xavier 25-33 in the Atlantic 10. UW-Milwaukee is likely a better team.

(3) Pitching. We gave up at least 10 hits in the first 3 games...to a team that probably have been outside with live pitching for 2 days. How many hits would UWM have had with the old bats?

(4) Homeruns are down. Due to new bats and the loss of our power guys

(5) Canisius comes in next week either 3-1 or 2-2 after a game tonight against Toledo. They have gone 1-1 against Creighton and 1-0 after Friday game against Toledo in Cary, NC tourney.

(6) So, our 2 assistant coaches have not really improved anything thus far.

The weather next weekend is expected to be a little cooler (mid-50s)

Baserunning was indeed awful....got way too many people thrown out at either home or trying to go another base....there's a difference in being stupid and aggressive

Good to get the kinks out early. I like the aggressive part though. It's way to early to know too much about this year's team.

The reaction time from the former batted balls to head was humanly impossible to protect against. It's Rolly's fault.

Difficult, yes, but I disagree that it was impossible to protect against. If a pitcher finishes his delivery with his glove near his upper chest and in an athletic, fielding position, there was enough reaction time (this is why Greg Maddux won so many Gold Gloves- ended his delivery with glove high and in a great fielding position).

Well...they use wood bats in the MLB...

The exit speed became insane.

I am a fan of taking away the front foot pop fly traveling 350'.

The pop wasn't taken away from the bats. The sweet spot was reduced, but actual exit speed was never altered.

This is significant since it means that there will be fewer 105mph+ hits rocketing at pitcher's craniums.

Take a look at this:

There is little doubt that metal bat exit speeds (BESR's) are an issue. Teaching proper fielding positions to F1 is like building a nuclear shelter to ward off radiation. You're attacking the wrong part of the (velocity) equation.

The gut truth is the fans want metal bats because they like offense and offense sells tickets and hot dogs. The metal bat mfgs want to sell metal because they have such huge markups v.s wood.

I don't expect a return to wood bat performance levels anytime soon. :cray:(Nearly) killing kids isn't good enough to promote the change.

One of the hidden, rarely discussed problems with metal bats is the scalloping of the bat which can be very hard to see. MOF, sometimes with painted bats you can't "see" it at all. you have to feel it or detect it with a ring pulled over the fat part of the bat.

I have over 1,000 games mostly as a plate umpire and have tossed dozens of metal bats. The bats looked perfect in condition (almost). The scalloping is very slight but what happens is the ball will hit the lip where the bat is curved inward (or in some cases humps outward) and Brother do you get  spins, hops and flights.

The batted ball velocity doesn't appear to change much, if at all, but these damaged bats can be used for years without detection. If they are ever detected. :bad:

Ok, Firestorm...now I'm starting to think you are Toles' dad or very close family member. What does this have to do with the bats?

Nothing but neither does saying UW Milwaukee is likely a better team.
This is about what have we learned in the Vols baseball 2011 season not about the changes with bats.
