Some things learned, others just reinforced. Probably over-simplistic for some of you.

1. America is still a moderate/slightly conservative leaning country as a whole.

2. The tea party philosophy is resonating with America, not just the right-wing base of the GOP.

3. In some areas conservative Republicans are going to just have to admit the GOP has to run a moderate in order to win and bite their tounges and do it and support them.

4. Independents determine elections. I think people lose sight of this fact too often when it is probably the biggest "duh" out there.

5. Tea party candidates won when they were legitimately electable. DE and NV showed that independents are going to decide to vote for a person based on the person as much, if not more, than a philosophy.

the same can be said for dems.

if the Dems are smart last night told them they went too far the last couple of years. They also concentrated on the wrong things when in office. I have my doubts whether the GOP can do much but at least it got rid of the rubber stamp/blank check that existed

Obama proved to be a cancer for anyone he spoke for, and several that he didn't.

I didn't have a Senate race so I missed those ads but I can't believe he wasn't tied in

America is a right of center country. Polls show this repeatedly... and it isn't slight. When the ideals of smaller gov't with lower taxes are separated from labels that have been demonized by the MSM (Republican, Tea Party) significant majorities express conservatism.

3. In some areas conservative Republicans are going to just have to admit the GOP has to run a moderate in order to win and bite their tounges and do it and support them.
Mostly true but their "moderation" has to be very "moderate". IMO, a person can be socially liberal so long as they support the ideals of limited gov't and giving authority back to states on social issues. Everyone including the right would be satisfied with that brand.

4. Independents determine elections. I think people lose sight of this fact too often when it is probably the biggest "duh" out there.
Independents are much too often foam on the sea. Their votes go to whoever they currently don't blame for problems.

5. Tea party candidates won when they were legitimately electable. DE and NV showed that independents are going to decide to vote for a person based on the person as much, if not more, than a philosophy.

I think when people are mercilessly attacked and have their character's assassinated... you can't really draw this kind of conclusion. When you factor in the power of Dem machines in those two states to twist arms and possibly help a few dead people to vote... you have a pretty cloudy picture.

Angle led until the Dem's "ground game" kicked in. For example the corporate bosses and union leaders at Harrah's twisting a few employee arms.

Both of these TP candidates made mistakes that "professional" politicians don't make... When people decide that they won't be manipulated, those mistakes will matter less and ideas will matter more.

Seems like the House races were tied nationally more than the Senate.

Still doesn't make a lot of sense, his state is in a mess.

That the people of Nevada are stupid and enjoy 14% unemployment

Unions drove that entire ordeal. Ed Schultz nearly creamed on his hair dye just talking about the strength those gaming unions and the AFL-CIO showed in supporting Reid.

What he missed is that the Republicans were fielding an utter buffoon, otherwise Reid gets dealt a landslide style beating.

Actually while Reid leaving would be a very healthy thing for the country at large, I really think his states problems rest mostly on the Governor's and that states house more than anything.

Republicans failed in putting together a coherent, national message or they wipe out the Dem advantage in the Senate as well. That said, it would work very much against the R party in the next election because we're in for two to five more years of awful economy. If the Rs controlled both houses, Obama would be a shoo in and we'd have another couple years of Dem monopoly again. This way, I don't believe the house can be completely overturned again because nobody can absolutely point the finger at the R controlled house.

That means a minimum of 4 years quasi gridlock.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought they did have a pretty coherent message. "Stop the Obama, Pelosi, Reid agenda, tax cuts, and smaller government" I heard basically these same talking points from most of the Republicans last night.

Being anti-incumbent isn't a message. Had there been any semblance of a platform, aside from sweeping generalities and regurgitation of polling questions, this would have been a wipeout. Doesn't help that idiots ended up on a couple of the senate ballots.
