First and foremost, I'm no football guru. To be frank, I'm more than a little ignorant. Just the same, I believe what sunk us was several things.
1. Beamer, had his boys ready for this game, and I do mean ready.
2. For a bit of time, his offense played Vols style, maybe not as fast, but his attack duplicated ours. This threw the defense off.
3. He recognized a sorry fact about our Vols. We don't tackle very well. Ball carriers often slip by our tacklers. We also don't do a good job of pursuing. This is especially true when it comes to open space tackling. So they played in a manner that saw our front line, usually strong against the rush, forced to spread out and expose our open space tackling deficiency. Added to our known soft secondary, a lost was too likely for comfort, and there it was.
4. Their secondary played very efficiently. I for one, was stunned they could keep up with our Wrs. They were often in position to break up passes, or just smother our Wrs.
5. Their Wrs either had fly paper or electronic homing beacons for hands. They caught darn nigh everything thrown their way.
6. Rattler is a good QB despite the arrogant criticism. Clearly, when he has protection, he is practically deadly.
I hate it when my cracked crystal ball predicts against Tennessee and proves accurate. But it foresaw SC having plenty of film to figure out how best to stop/slow our offense, and had personnel to do just that. Then, there was the motivation of last season's lost, and a chance to knock off a potential playoff contender. We are the only one that of the top five to lose. The others had close calls too, including OSU, as they were saved by a fumble recovery for a TD.
Hopefully, next season, we have a defense capable of stopping the bleeding TD bleeding.
