Bear learned how to cheat at KY under Adolph Rupp. Kentucky and cheating go together like peanut butter and jelly.
Where would Kentucky's historically shameful football program be, if Bear had stayed in Lexington? Where would Bama's be?
The art of cheating lies not in the cheating itself, but the getting away with it. Think they don't cheat in Knoxville? Think again, bro. They're just good at not getting caught.
This is a fantastic question. Had Bryant stayed in Lexington and been able to stave off the pressures of stupid Kentucky legislators (more on that in a moment), UK could have avoided the utter failure of John Ray and the scandal of Fran Curci. The support was there to build a perennial winner, both from administration and fanbase. Heck, I have never seen a fanbase get behind a perennial loser like they do in Lexington. It is not implausable to think that he couldn't have won a few NC's there.
As it was, he did not leave due to a lack of support in football or animosity towards Rupp. His warm friendship with Rupp is well-documented. The last straw, in fact, was a stupid bunch of legislators in Frankfort who decided to tell him who he could recruit-- mostly boys from Kentucky high schools. As Kentucky did not produce much football talent, the results speak for themselves. Texas A&M came calling, and he took off to abuse the Junction Boys.

Bear told his coaches at Alabama that the reason that he left UK was because he had some great teams at UK and the most he ever got was a watch.
Rupp had some great teams and ended up with a Cadillac. He said that he knew right then where Kentucky football stood and started looking for another job.
This came directly from a coach at Alabama who was there at the time.
