I was watching the Broncos-Redskin's game Sunday evening, and for the first time I thought it's very plausible to see Peyton retire after this season (I think he'd like to go out with a bang/SB win like Elway did), and seriously consider a coaching job somewhere.
It's been premature to think about such things in the past, but I do think he will heavily consider retiring this year. If he indeed does, then you have solid reasons for both paths (broadcast or coaching).
He got his degree in Communications, rather than Sports Management, so one could use that as a basis to indicate where his intentions lie. However, we all know that Peyton is a defacto Offensive Coordinator on his teams, and it has been that way most of his career.
So, that element has changed the equation. Laugh and flame all you want, but one thing is for certain, there will be a number of phone calls made, offering him either a QB coach or OC position, in the NFL....once he announces his retirement. Teams will line up around the block to try and persuade him. In fact, I would expect the Broncos to be the first in line.
Having said all of that...when Peyton looks at his alma mater struggling to regain it's footing while Saban has had a stranglehold on the SEC for a number of years, I have to wonder if he wouldn't accept the offer (to be the new OC for the Vols), if CBJ was to offer it to him.
It could turn the fortunes of the program even more rapidly than we all thought possible. Where Bama has been raking in Top 3 recruiting classes for the past 5yrs or so, it would be our turn to sit on the recruiting crown each year. We would never have to fight other teams for the best HS QB prospects...and consequently WR prospect, too.
If he wanted to upset Saban's applecart, that would do it. What say ye, gentlemen? Do you think there's even a 50% chance he'd be offered, let alone accept? I wonder what that would mean for Bajakian?
