What if Peyton retired after this season?

Fran Tarkenton retired with all the QB records and did Monday Night Football, "That's Incredible" and started a software company.

Roger Staubach won both a Heisman and 2 superbowls and became a color commentator and business man when he retired.

Troy Aikman won 3 super bowls and does broadcasting for Fox, as well as owns a NASCAR team and part of the Padres

Dan Marino is another HOF QB, who retired and went into a mix of broadcasting and business ventures.

And of course John Elway retired as the winningest QB at the time and now works for the Broncos organization.

Point is all of these HOF QBs could have done anything when they retired and I'm sure many were encouraged to go into coaching...none did.

I can't think of any QB at the level of Peyton Manning who chose to go into coaching when they were done playing.

Peyton will be sitting right next to Gruden and be talking about NFL!

And VOL faithful will say its a smoke screen to have gruden as HC and Peyton as OC.

Butch please!

Did you see where Gruden said last week he would like to try coaching again?

Why would Peyton tarnish his image amongst Vol fans and coach here? First sign of something bad and he would no longer be a VFL.

If Peyton retired today, he would continue his life long mission of erasing Dan Marino and would take his chair on the CBS kickoff show.

Manning would definitely want to come to us as a position coach. His $20,000,000 in salary this year... and next... won't last long and he'll need the cool million a position coach salary pays to get him back on his feet again.

Manning will be a GM for which ever NFL team he chooses. Our best hope would be any involvement with some form of recruiting through the Manning camps. Make it a pipeline for the best high-school qb's to UT.

Nobody is saying he should be a HC, but if you don't realize by now that Peyton is BOTH the QB and the de facto Offensive Coordinator for his team, then you should just STFU and sit down. You have nothing to contribute to the discussion. Everyone....but you, I suppose, knows he runs the offense, and for this reason he can step into any OC or QB coaching job he wants.

Again, all you smart-mouth a$$hats won't have shiite to say once he retires. Again, there WILL be no shortage of offers for him to be an offensive coordinator or QB coach. The list will be longer than his HS offer list.

He may choose the broadcast route, instead, but Peyton isn't a HOF shoe in because of his athleticism. It's because he has a brilliant offensive mind and unmatched work ethic. He enjoys playing mental chess games with opposing DC's. This is why I personally believe he will feel compelled to continue to compete....mentally...by coaching, rather than commentating.

The question is whether he decides to go out on top and retires after this season. And if so, would CBJ offer him the job at UT? It's a legitimate question to ask. Peyton already runs a fast tempo offense, so it wouldn't be a drastic change in offensive philosophy.

No one is arguing that he isn't a brilliant offensive mind.
But you're taking and making a real stretch with that...you should take a hint on this subject when you're the only one who thinks that he'll end up coaching at UT.

Once he retires, Peyton will sit in a booth announcing NFL games and continue to operate his QB camp.

While I don't think Peyton will retire after this year even if he wins the SB, nor do I think he will coach at anything above the high school level when he does retire, I'll play along for a minute.

So, would Butch offer him a job as OC?

Well first of all we have an OC who has been with CBJ since CMU. Do you really see him getting fired to be replaced by someone who has never called plays from the sidelines/booth before?

But let's pretend and say he is offered and accepts the job. CBJ doesn't run the same offense Manning is familiar with. So would you expect CBJ to change his system to fit Manning or Manning to adapt to CBJ's system.

I think it will be another 3 or 4 years before he retires. I feel like I'm one of the very few people that feel like he will coach instead of doing tv work. I feel like he just loves the game, offense, competition etc.. To much to not coach. And because of his sheer football genius and other obvious reasons I would love to see home coach UT, idc I'd we already are rolling and have a championship team. My only question is would he actually choose coaching at UT over coaching in the NFL?
My dream team would be
Cutcliff HC
Peyton OC
Chavis DC
Fulmer for AD

It's not 1995 anymore.

I was watching the Broncos-Redskin's game Sunday evening, and for the first time I thought it's very plausible to see Peyton retire after this season (I think he'd like to go out with a bang/SB win like Elway did), and seriously consider a coaching job somewhere.

It's been premature to think about such things in the past, but I do think he will heavily consider retiring this year. If he indeed does, then you have solid reasons for both paths (broadcast or coaching).

He got his degree in Communications, rather than Sports Management, so one could use that as a basis to indicate where his intentions lie. However, we all know that Peyton is a defacto Offensive Coordinator on his teams, and it has been that way most of his career.

So, that element has changed the equation. Laugh and flame all you want, but one thing is for certain, there will be a number of phone calls made, offering him either a QB coach or OC position, in the NFL....once he announces his retirement. Teams will line up around the block to try and persuade him. In fact, I would expect the Broncos to be the first in line.

Having said all of that...when Peyton looks at his alma mater struggling to regain it's footing while Saban has had a stranglehold on the SEC for a number of years, I have to wonder if he wouldn't accept the offer (to be the new OC for the Vols), if CBJ was to offer it to him.

It could turn the fortunes of the program even more rapidly than we all thought possible. Where Bama has been raking in Top 3 recruiting classes for the past 5yrs or so, it would be our turn to sit on the recruiting crown each year. We would never have to fight other teams for the best HS QB prospects...and consequently WR prospect, too.

If he wanted to upset Saban's applecart, that would do it. What say ye, gentlemen? Do you think there's even a 50% chance he'd be offered, let alone accept? I wonder what that would mean for Bajakian?

Peyton is on record more than once for saying he's not going to coach college. I seem to recall he mentioned high school coaching as a possibility, but not college. Just because he's a great QB (who chokes in championship playoffs) doesn't mean he'd be a great coach. I suspect based on his comments about coaching he's figured that out even if the pipe dreamers haven't.

Broncos aren't event the best team in their division. What makes you think they are a lock for the Super Bowl?

When the Chiefs beat the Colts and play the Ravens instead of the Browns let me know.

All of us Vol maniacs will always dream of the day that Peyton comes back to the hill to coach us back to 1 National Championship after another and will WIN 8 of 10 NC's that he leads us too.

Great dream but a DREAM is all it will ever be unfortunately.

There's no way in h3ll that Peyton would subject himself to a much more brutal and time consuming effort like the year long grind of coaching and recruiting and having to beg kids to come play at Tennessee.

If, and a huge if, he were ever to become a coach it would be in the NFL where he'll earn lots more $$$ and he'll have alot more time off to do as he pleases.

It would be my guess that he'll end up on TV making alot more $$$ and having even more time off too.

I don't really think Peyton is ready to hang up his cleats just yet even if he does win the Superbowl this season simply because he loves the game so much and he seems to be feeling pretty good too.

Only time will tell but I'd bet my house he'll never coach for our beloved Vols when he can help us in other ways and have more time off to enjoy the rest of his life.

I'm happy with bUTch and his staff since I've seen proof of us getting better in just year 1 under his guidance.

Our future looks very bright if we'll just leave bUTch alone and let him do his thing for several more years.

There is light at the end of this 6 year tunnel and some of you want to start digging a new hole.

This site never ceases to amaze me.

When the Chiefs are not +6 in wins this year compared to last, let me know.

When the Chiefs are losing the games they are supposed win, let me know.

When the Chiefs quit being the loudest NFL stadium, let me know.

When the Chiefs lose with a lot of second stringer receivers, let me know.
