What is a Volunteer? The story behind University of Tennessee's nickname
The name gained momentum as more and more newspapers referred to back to the military spirit of the men of Tennessee. The name was then solidified in 1848 when President James K. Polk of Tennessee called on 2,600 volunteers for the Mexican-American War and 30,000 Tennesseans showed up.
Does this sound familiar? 3500 allotted tickets yet Coach Heupel has called for The Volunteers to show up in Columbus. I’m hoping to see our 30,000 and just maybe ESPN will explain to all the viewers what a Volunteer is.
