what is the latest on G. Williams

From a previous thread and a June 1 Tennessean article.
It is the last direct info I have seen....
On Gerald Williams’ status…
Fulmer said he remains committed to getting defensive end Gerald Williams through the NCAA Clearinghouse.
Williams signed with the Vols as part of the 2005 signing class and practiced briefly last season before being sent home because of a snag with the Clearinghouse.
He re-signed in February and was planning on coming back to UT this summer, but still hasn't made it through the Clearinghouse. Tennessee officials are putting together a waiver on Williams' behalf.
At issue is a course he took at University High in Miami, a correspondence school that has since been declared invalid by the NCAA.

i hope he gets in, i think the NCAA should let the students who went through the schools before they were suspended go through, other wise i bet the students wouldnt have gone there in the first place

Unfortunately the NCAA will do what they feel is necessary to save face, not what is right. I agree that they should allow these guys to get on with their life, not be held up by a loop hole that the NCAA didn't catch and close until after the fact.

I hate the slimy prep school/correspondence course subculture that has attached itself to the eligibility process. That said, you should never give rule retroactive effect. That's the very reason we have the prohibition on ex post facto laws in the Constitution, they're patently unfair.

That's "from after the fact" for the non-Latin scholars.

Supposedly he scored high enough on the ACT that the Univ. High course does not matter. Just a rumor at this point but confiramtion should come quick if this is true.

I heard the same thing from a pretty credible poster on another board. Hopefully it's true.
I also heard it from a very good source. He made the test score and it wasn't too high that it flagged him. He really should be good to go. Hopefully the clearinghouse won't hold him up. I don't think they will. The odds seem to be pretty good that he sees the field this year.

Would Williams be ready to come in and play this year if he could?

I think he could decapitate someone right now if they have not been properly working out the neck and shoulders. Hopefully we get to see him bring the pain. I used to love watching players in the offensive backfield look to see where Al Wilson was coming from. It was almost like they knew that no matter where he lined up, if he was not double or trible blocked he would rip their head off. Last year we had a shotdown denfense and they were awesome. I would really like to see us get back to a killer defense.

I was looking at some of his highschool stats on utsports, he's going to be fun to watch. If he does in fact finally make it through the clearinghouse, he might be the jolt that our defensive line needs.

I'm just assuming that he's going to play DE.

The bright side of this clearinghouse stuff is that he's more mature now and still has 4 years to play right?
As senior, 135 tackles with 15 for loss, nine sacks and three interceptions ... Had 23 tackles, two sacks and 25-yard interception return for TD against Dillard ... Against Miramar, had 20 tackles and 89-yard interception return for TD ... In 2003, had 132 tackles with six sacks.

Can't wait...
