What Joe Milton said in recent press conference

"So I’m obligated to move faster. I see things different. I can also talk to the receivers and let them know what I see now. I get to play more smooth, more calm and just be me."

I think one of the misunderstood aspects of physical play is how much mental play affects it. Many of us thought of Milton's overthrown long passes in 2021 a result of mechanics, touch, whatever. But it was probably moreso a result of swimming mentally. He started a game at QB after being on campus for a little over a month.

We kept hearing that he made those throws in practice. Then he made them in games last year. When your head is swimming, sometimes your body doesn't do what it's trained to do. As Joe is even more comfortable in the mental aspect of this offense this year, I think we'll see him be very accurate. And we'll see why coaches didn't lose faith in him.

I don't know how you can't root for the guy

Don't fret, bub. Most of us are firmly seated in JoMil's corner. But you can bet your life we have a faction who insist on finding reasons to not support him. I do think we believers out number the Vols player haters and doubters. Heup! Heup, hooray!

This is such an important aspect that doesn't get the air time it deserves. Think about all of the 1st rounders that "bust." Did they all of a sudden become bad football players? No. In many cases the mental aspects of the game make or break these young men (and women in other sports). When you think too much you get slow and that doesn't end well in tough games. Really good post.

He has earned his shot and it's been a long road. He gets that thing under control, look out SEC!

He's got it under control. His performance from last year to the tear before are day and night, culminating in the Orange Bowl as proof. Just think of Pitt at home in '21-'22 and then the Orange Bowl '22-'23. He's matured and has the right coaching around him. He's learned from his mistakes. Leaders Lead.

I'm sure Hendon had a huge influence on Joe (on and off the field) and was a great mentor. Now Joe is paying it forward. Good to see and it tells us a lot about his character and the team culture that coach and the staff are fostering.

Joe is gonna play himself right into first round draft pick discussion with that cannon arm.
Absolutely. I was at the mizzou game, the bomb he threw to Squirrel towards the end of the game was absolutely ridiculous! Been to a ton of UT games over the years, and I've never seen an arm like that. Tyler Bray was probably the closest, he could sling it.

Stole the words right outta my head. JM showed more in the Orange Bowl, than AR did all year at Florida.
Someone please explain the Richardson hype to me. And Levis too for that matter. I just don’t get it. I did not see either one of them do anything all year last year that merits the draft hype they are getting. I’m not a football expert - really I’m not - and they may have talent I just don’t appreciate, but I don’t see either of them being in the same zip code with Hooker and others that are legit first round picks. But I do see everything through Orange-tinted glasses so keep that in mind.

Potential, Potential, Potential. They see guys with ideal measurements and an arm that can make all the throws. They think they can fix between the ears, both will be colossal busts imo. Stroud and Young are the only franchise QB's in this draft, Hooker can be good in the right situation and SHOULD be QB3. If Milton puts up Hooker type numbers this year and hits the deep ball consistently I have zero doubt he will be a top 5 pick or even number 1 overall. The NFL loves potential and Milton oozes it. He will be battling Caleb Williams and Drake May for first overall.

I can't explain anything except what I think I saw. Levis first. I think he is a good QB, better than average. BUT, his OC, I believe, left Kentucky. The guy who replaced him, his offense philosophy, literally put a damper on Levis, that played against, rather than to his strength. Secondly, the Cats' OL took a step back from a year ago. Which is why Levis got beat up so much.

As AR, it's his legs that are his primary asset. I suspect he never matured beyond being a dynamic high school player. Whether it was ineffective coaching, or his being uncoachable at the collegiate level, or his OL was uncharacteristically porous. I suspect my first take. He was used to living via his running and never really did learn to be a complete QB.

Both players have desirable aspects, but AR has greater deficiencies to overcome. Levis can become a quality pro QB. AR might if he gets a team and coach patient enough to develop him over several years. If not, they may try to turn him into either a WR or TE. On account of what he can do with the ball in hand. But then again, what the heck do I know? Not a freaking thing.

I agree with everything you said, it’s a dangerous game drafting on potential alone. If Levis and Richardson get picked ridiculously high and flop, them teams are going to pay dearly for it. There is no G league like basketball who drafts a bunch solely if a guy can run and jump and has potential even if he isn’t even doing good in college. In football if I am drafting a qb in a early round I am looking for one that has actually demonstrated he can win on a big level. Neither one of the 2 earlier mentioned guys demonstrated to me they are a first round pick based on play so far. But it’s their money so spend away, I will just sit back and watch. GBO

Yep agreed, if a QB isn't elite in college I don't know why they think he will be elite in the pro's. If I'm investing a 1st round pick I am expecting elite production. Levis looked like Carson Wentz in college (the Wentz from the last 3 years) and Richardson didn't dominate the way he should have given his physical attributes. I think both will be busts, just hope the Titans steer clear of both.
