Thought it might be fun to discuss languages considering I find them phenomenal and enjoy learning. My fiancée is Brazilian so I’m currently learning Brazilian Portuguese although she’s fluent in English. It’s somewhat similar to Spanish which I speak a little of. What about you guys? Ever learned a different language or aspire to do so?

How long did BR Portuguese take you to get intermediate level?
good question. maybe a year or so, but I knew some spanish before and I learned portuguese talking to brasilians, so that helped (speed things up) a lot.

but I definitely am not always using it much or studying it, so I haven't increased my level much in the last few years. I'll go through a phase a few times a year where I listen to podcasts, music, and watch youtube videos which helps me maintain (if I'm not talking to brasilian friends all that often)

Ahhh I see. I’m gonna hire a coach or something, my Fiancée claims she doesn’t know how to teach me but I know the easiest way to learn is by speaking it

My wife won't teach me Spanish. I had to start learning enough basics to be sort of conversational and then just started talking with her and her family.

That’s the easiest way to learn, by speaking. My fiancée also speaks Japanese, I noticed you said you’re fairly fluent. She’s mixed Brazilian/Japanese

There are a TON of Japanese people in Brazil and Peru (where my wife is from). In Peru they ended up with a lot of fusion food, Brazilians got Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

I studied Japanese at UT after I had an awesome week long trip to Tokyo in high school. Did study abroad in Japan and we took a month-long trip to tour around there back in 2019.

My fiancée has lived most of her life in Japan. Was learning it difficult?

The basics are not so bad. The grammar structure is easy and if you can pick up vocabulary well you can be passable pretty quick for a foreigner. The challenge comes with reading kanji (thousands of characters) and all the situational language. You can't use certain words and have to conjugate verbs differently depending on who you are taking to, for instance. It's a super high context language. Unfortunately I think there's no real way to get good at Japanese without being there.

Yeah I’m gonna stick to learning BR Portuguese. I might learn the basics of Japanese eventually. Our kids will end up learning English, Portuguese, and Japanese. I definitely want to learn Portuguese, I’d hate our kids to be running around speaking a language I can’t understand haha
