As ESPN is willing to televise almost any type of competition, I am wondering what it takes for something to qualify as a sport for some of you? Is anything involving a competition between individuals or teams a sport? Or does it take more?

Off of the top of my head:

It has to require some sort of physical talent and involve competition.

nope because espn shows poker, and the spelling bee, man those are some physically challenging sports. u have to train years with weights to get to the championship rounds

In my mind, it has to be measurable (score, distance, points) not subjective (ice skating).

The "E" stands for entertainment.

Poker is a game, not a sport.

If you don't think golf takes physical skill, go play a round under par.

i play golf, but i don't consider walkin around in dress clothes n hittin a little white ball with some irons a sport. i love the contact sports, and even running sports because that takes a lot out of you. but golf i've always struggled with it being a sport. great game though

Oh, I understand. This is all just opinion. I give golf the sports nod just because of the great deal of physical talent required.

Full contact golf: now that would be a sport. :)

Is car racing a sport?

That is a good one. It does take skill, but I have a tougher time thinking car racing a sport than golf.

I have no interest in car racing, so I will leave that to the other experts.

i use to hate nascar, but since i went to talladega last year, i've been hooked. it takes a lot of skill to drive a car around near 200 miles per hour goin in and out of traffic.

Auto racing is a strain mentally and physically. Sure, most drivers aren't in the same shape as your world class athletes, but not just anyone can get out there in a car and compete at a high level their first time or two.

A good example of the mental aspect; A quarterback has to think quick to perform well because of how fast the game is moving. A racecar driver is the same way, except he's moving somewhere in the neighborhood of 200mph.

I couldn't have said it any better. Yes racing is a sport!
