What Tennessee fans can expect from Von Pearson - Saturday Down South

I think he's going to be great. But CP great? Time will tell.

Lavon “Von” Pearson has taken a different road to Knoxville than most. A high school standout, Pearson received zero offers from major programs after failing to reach academic requirements. Out of football and working at a local Newport News, Va. McDonald’s, Pearson was urged by a friend to enroll at Feather River College in Quincy, California. Two weeks later, the former fast food cashier began his journey across country to eventually become a 2013 junior college All-American and conference MVP.

Pearson played two seasons at Feather River College, beginning in 2012. His first season saw him record 39 receptions for 757 yards and 10 touchdowns. Last season, Pearson posted a JUCO-best 93 receptions for 1,601 yards and 12 touchdowns. He holds or shares every Feather River receiving record, including single-season receptions (93), career receptions (132), single-season receiving yards (1,601), career receiving yards (2,358), single-season touchdowns (12) and career touchdowns (22). Pearson had more than 200 receiving yards in a game on five occasions, including a career-best and school record 311 yards on 19 receptions with three touchdowns vs. Sierra (9/14/13).

Tennessee was the first major program to offer Pearson a scholarship and the four-star JUCO transfer acted immediately, shutting down his recruitment shortly after. Pearson enrolled early this past January and has already impressed coaches with his skills and worth ethic.

“He comes every day with energy and passion,” offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian told UTSports. “Frankly, it’s pretty infectious. I love being around him. He’s a guy that the other newcomers have rallied around to try and get the lay of the land. Not so much that he’s a junior college player, but just his life experience.”

The comparison that will inevitably be made by Vol fans is Pearson to former JUCO transfer and Tennessee standout Cordarrelle Patterson. Though Pearson and the current Minnesota Vikings pro bowler have similar attributes, including standing at 6-3, the two players vary from one another. Patterson has a slight speed advantage and a bigger frame while Pearson has superior hands and ball skills. It’s too soon to say whether Pearson will match the Patterson’s stellar season at Tennessee, but heading into his first season with the Vols, expectations should be high.

I think he has the potential to be the greatest player ever from Feather River College.

Shows how much Butch and his coaches actually look at talent. We were his first offer and seems very grateful to represent the orange and white.

He was as good as he was here even with an incompetent coach. He should have been used as a punt return here as well for ever punt kicked to us in 2012. His playmaking ability is bar none the best we have had here offensively since Jamal Lewis or Travis Henry. An absolute game changer every time he touched the ball. It'd be hard to top his playmaking abilities, but VP can easily be a better all around WR in terms of route running and ball catching.

If only he had been here a few years back, he could have hooked Nu'Keese Richardson up with a burger and spared us that embarassing incident! ;)

I still laugh at and share with folks about VP asking the coach the best cleats to buy and being informed the school had that covered. Even if Bajakian hadn't said it you could tell by his interviews that he is humble and someone who is pleasant to be around.

This young man is one of the most proud and honored "Student Athletes" I have ever heard speak...at least since he arrived. It is amazing how one walk of life will view this opportunity vs. someone highly sought after from the same walk of life will often take it for granted. I hope he does great things while he is here at Tennessee.

And as for the CP comparison....he really looks to be the more polished WR so far from what clips I have seen of him.

I really like this kid and I've never met him. We need more humble athletes in college and pro sports. The kind of people that I don't mind my child looking up to as a role model. They are becoming few and far between.

Met him once and he was easily the most humble player I'd ever met. His backstory lends credence to the attitude I experienced.

I drafted him last in my fantasy draft. My friends were like "who is that", they said the same thing when I drafted CP.

That might be overkill.

CP was amazing the way he could run and dodge and break tackles. Not an overkill at all. If he was on a good football team he would of been hyped up a lot more with the national media.
