"ON HAVING PLAYED AMATEUR BASEBALL IN CUBA IN 1993 The Cuban fans sing, they clap, they live and die for baseball. It's like European soccer. The only thing you could compare it with here would be Alabama football. " :dunno:

Short Stay? Wasn't he in K-Town for about 21 years? I think he was a native of Knoxville.

Yea,

Helton lived in Knoxville most of his life, he was born and raised there. He graduated from Knox Central High School. I think he still has a home in Knoxville.

There, that proves it. I always thought he was more focused on baseball while he was here...

Say what you want about Helton's football skills, but he helped stop the bleeding in '94 while Peyton Manning was being broken in.
.
All in all, I think he made the right career choice

Yes, he made the right career choice, but come on, citing Alabama as the best representation of obsessed fans... Maybe he didn't mean it as a compliment?

Keep in mind, he's talking about playing in front of poor people who have nothing to live for because they live in a backwards, underdeveloped country.

Sounds like the perfect time to use an Alabama analogy to me.

That's what I thought too.
