From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

A salty dog is a cocktail of vodka or gin and grapefruit juice, served in a glass with a salted rim. The salt is the only difference between a Salty Dog and a Greyhound. Salty Dogs are also featured in the game Kingdom of Loathing where it is made by mixing a grapefruit and gin, which can later be combined with brine to make an especially salty dog.

See the "discussion" tab (above) for an alternate definition of the words "salty dog." ...

or not because I'm too lazy to paste it all in from Wikipedia.

Memphis,

As far as I know, the term "Salty Dog" is an old term for a seasoned sailor. In doing a little research on the Morris Brothers' song, I fould a couple of explanations. The most plausible seems that they wrote it after frequenting either a restaurant or a "honky-tonk" somewhere in North Carolina. Apparently, there was also a snack food back in the 30's called "Salty Dog," but I can't find much info on that.
