When I was a teenager we had the choice of either cloth low top or high top Converse or some kind of generic Converse. IIRC, they all had white soles and came with either plain black or white tops with white shoestrings. We also wore jeans with holes that were patched but we did not buy them that way.

Can't recall if they were the first I bought but...when they got old and ragged out I spray painted them orange. In 1990 I moved to Lexington to attend grad school and I taught classes. On football weekend Fridays I wore them to class. I had 2 UK football players in class. They hated the shoes. I made a bet with them for the upcoming UT/UK game (prolly 92). If UK won, I'd give the shoes to those guys, they'd paint them blue and I'd where them to class.

I used to be able to say those shoes were still orange (until Dooley )
