Easy to picture Oats' comments getting him added to a civil suit due to a "failure to exercise institutional control", etc.

"Wrong place, wrong time" comment was essentially a shoulder shrug, and not even a show of discipline for the associates really seems to indicate a Wild West culture. Miller just happens to arrive with a loaded gun in the back of his car, the same gun that kills woman who declined another teammates advances....and doesn't miss a game? Meanwhile, counterparts in New Mexico are ending a season for lesser infractions?

Seems like he runs a loose shipwreck there, and is courting a civil suit. Culture of violence, etc.

I'm no Johnny Cochran. But I don't think AL State law works that way. LIC is an NCAA violation, not a State penalty code violation.
Now, will he get a civil suit? That's another story. Usually one that leads to some litigator finding a possible route to his bank account.

If Miller is free and clear why even bring this up?

It’s not a shot OP I’m just saying Bud Kilmer down in Bama has “made this go away”.

Do you think your employer could be named if you, on your own time, provided a weapon for a coworker who then loaned it to an idiot friend to commit a murder?

Why in the hell would your employer be legally involved in your dumbass decisions when you're off or your idiot coworker? He's not their Daddy and they aren't underage.

Get out of here with that crap.

Anything can happen in AL but what liability does Oats have? It would be a frivolous lawsuit.

Miller is where the money will be when he signs his NBA contract, and it's easy to attach liability, even if he isn't criminally charged.

Yep, he will definitely lose a large chunk of that signing bonus, if not a few years worth of salary to boot. What completely fails me is the police saying there is nothing they can charge him with. (1) Brings a gun on request to a person who has been in a bar drinking then said gun is used with pre-mediation to kill another person whose car has been blocked in by a car Miller was driving. This is according to the police reports. It would not surprise me to see the Feds get involved with some form of kidnapping charge and violation of civil rights. This thing could get very ugly.

What are the odds he’ll get sued under a cause of action that doesn’t exist at law, but rather, is an accusation the NCAA can levy against its member institutions?

Zero percent.
