The brutal nature of next year's schedule combined with losing most of the people responsible for our production on offense has been talked about enough that I don't think most of us expect to contend for the East next season. We're going to lose the bulk of the starters on both lines after next season. Given the time it usually takes to get incoming lineman strong and big enough to be an effective starter in the SEC, I'm not sure that we will have much of a DL in 2014. It just seems like the program is completely out of synch where we're constantly going back square one at some crucial area while peaking at another. We're basically at the bottom the SEC right now so how many years should it take to get this thing set to rights?

Year 2...

Year 2 is also normally the 'magical' year for most new coaches. The most improvement is from year one to year two. I think next year it will be a year of adjustment just not for our offense but for the defense as well going back to square one. All the 'good' coaches in this league did very well in year two. Meyer, Muschamp, Richt, Saban, Miles, have all went 13-1 in year two at their schools. I expect at least 10 wins in 2014 and in the discussion in the east.

depends on the definition of relevance.

to be a ranked team playing in a january bowl.....i'd say 2 or 3 years.

to be a serious sec championship contender where people look at tennessee as an odds on favorite to potentially win the sec east......4 years

Kelly turned ND around in 3 with that being said they do not play in the SEC and they were not in as bad of shape as we were but we also dont know how Coach Jones will coach and if it will lead to success so I say best case 3 years and more likely 5 years. It all depends on getting a good season and getting recruits minds changed to want to come to UT.

This is not the same mess as the last coaching change. We lost a few to the draft but they were going anyway. Yr 2 of the CBJ era could be real special.

CBJ will pull one upset next year (USCe). He will bring the swagger. 7-5 next year. Solid recruiting class. Year 2 will be breakout year and return to top.

Unanswerable question, OP. Too many assumptions have to be made starting with scheduling. Does the SEC expand again within the next 5 years? If so, who will the teams be? Will those teams be in markets where the talent will want to stay home around those schools since they would be in the SEC? Are those areas where UT pulls good players?

Next, is CBJ capable of leading UT to the top? If so, when and how will he accomplish it? Will he be able to retain a capable, top staff during the climb? What makes him different in his appeal to the top players such that they would pass on Saban, Richt, Spurrier, Miles, Muschamp and Sumlin to come to UT? Are we waiting for some of them to be retired, take another job, be fired, etc. before UT can get there?

It is starting near, not completely at, the bottom. There is enough talent on the roster to win 7 or 8 games next season with competent coaching and some good luck. It is a one day at a time thing with the current focus being totally on recruiting. For each year they finish mid pack or worse on the recruiting class another year gets added to the recovery period.

To become an SEC contender UT will not only have to coach up the players but will have to recruit extremely well......we all have witnessed how just one or two very special players can change the whole dynamics of a team. If Jones is able to land some special talent relatively soon, say in year 1 or 2 we could possibly be back in the mix in year 3.....after witnessing the last few years I have tempered my hopes as have most other realistic fans.....I've followed the Vols since the late 60's and have never witnessed such a down turn, but I sure would enjoy seeing a return to the glory days of the 90's.....I just hope we are able to turn it around because the performance lately has been disgusting to say the least

This thread is not meant to be a "woe is us" discussion. I'd just like a serious talk about where we are and how long it will take to get us where we all want to be. This is going to take a building up job. There's some good pieces in place for 2013 and if we get lucky, maybe we get a RB like Green who can get behind that experienced OL and batter some people into submission. Otherwise, I think that just getting bowl games will be a challenge for the next couple of seasons and any success we have beyond that will be accomplished only by recruiting better athletes to come to UTK while we are still losing on the field which is a daunting task for any staff. If anyone has a roadmap, I'd love to read about it here.
