Follow-up question: Does anyone know if he has another year of eligibility left? Would he need a medical redshirt to get an extra season?
He has been in college since 2016 so he must have taken all kinds of shirts but I believe if he plays less than 4 games this year his eligibility would be preserved.

TIFWIW "November" is what I heard most recently

That’s def what VQ is saying.

He would have to apply for his 6th year/medical redshirt and receive an extra year. Not saying he can’t, just saying it’s not a given.

He has a VERY complicated history, but he's already taken a RS and a covid year if my math is adding up (he also took a mormon mission). I think there's a chance he could get a medical RS, but he would be like 24 or 25 playing against 18 year olds plus he already got a bonus covid year. My bet is this is it for him unless there's a solid loophole.

Pili needs one more year to finish that PhD.

Probably better if he doesn’t return. Tennessee is stacked with young and better talent that needs reps

well 7 years to play 6 seasons (instead of 6 to play 5), but I get what you're saying.

IF he is granted the medical waiver, it will be 6 years total of participation with a free 7th due to COVID.

For anyone that wants the breakdown on why I think he has a good case at getting a medical waiver if he wants to apply:

1) 2016 was True Freshman year at BYU and was redshirted

17 Mormon Mission
18 Mormon Mission

2) 2019 RS Freshman BYU
3) 2020 RS Soph BYU ****but COVID so doesn't count toward eligibility
4) 21 RS BYU Junior BYU
5) 22 RS BYU Senior BYU
6) 23 Super (RS)Senior## But only played 29 snaps at UT due to injury
7) 24 Medical Hardship Waiver???

So he's already played 6 seasons total, but 1 (COVID) doesn't count, so really 5, but technically only 4 plus 29 snaps in his 5th countable season of eligibility. If he comes back he can still stay under the 30%, which is 4 games of a season. So he could come back in November, play the last 2-3 games, but might have to skip a conference championship if that were to happen. It's very confusing on the bowl game. Would be a nice problem to have if/when we get to that point. He might have to hold out depending on if/when he might come back and play in 23.

Is there a chance he will be back this week or even next ? (or at all this season) ? I know this question came up in thread last week and some folks suggested it could be next week based on Huepel's vague response.

He could always transfer to Florida & get another year.

If the target date is UGA then realistically it’s the bowl game but at that point I doubt he would even bother playing in it unless he was definitely going to try to return next year. More useful to get the young guys more reps in it as well if he’s not returning.

Agreed. One would think that with our LB recruiting of late and the way we rotate these young LBs into games, we'd have plenty of options next year. Granted, the guy is older and experienced, but I think we'll be fine if he does move on. Frankly, we could use the spot for the portal.
