Howdy to everyone here in Vol Nation. I just want to express how excited we are in Herd Nation to have the chance to visit Knoxville for the second time. I remember like it was yesterday when the game was coming down to the wire and our QB got knocked out of the game. The one thing that was noticed by everyone in green that visited that day, you guys and gals have a first class group of fans. Everyone in our small town of Huntington WV was talking about how well we were treated and we deeply appreciate it. Just to give you a little piece of info on our program and where we stand ... we are down this year due to being under a new coaching staff that is trying to run the system a little different. Everyone knows when a new coach comes in you need to give him three of four years to recruit the players needed for his style of ball. Right now we look like a mess on offense and our D plays with the heart of a lion. We are young almost in every position, but well be a vet team in two years. So in saying this without trying to b-little the team I love and cheer for, this game should be a L in your bracket and a great learning experience for our young team and new coaching staff. I look forward to tail gating with everyone there Saturday and expect our fans to treat each of you with the same respect of class shown unto us.

One of the questions that pops up every now and then on our board is where should be go before the game and after? I told a few people that Colhauns was a great place after the game. Can you name a few good places before the game? Come and visit our board and talk with us. We welcome you to show great fan support, which you will receive from us.

So ... what are a few good places in that wonderful Knoxville town before the game? I heard O' Charleys closed the doors ... correct? That is where I relaxed last time ... really good time

Welcome aboard!

As you could probably guess, we're all a little sore after the one-point loss to Florida. Try to ignore all the negativity, if you can.

Very cool first post. 99% of the fans you'll meet in God's Country are exceptionally welcoming to visiting fans. (That figure drops to about 75% when we're playing Florida or Alabama). Glad you enjoyed your first trip, and I hope your second is even better.

Gameday activities start early -- I'd explore the tailgating at the lots near the stadium, Circle Park, and Fraternity Row (that's where the coolest setups usually are). A lot of folks will offer hospitality. I'd try to make it down to the Vol Navy, which docks near Calhoun's, if the weather is nice. Basically, a bunch of nutty fans who cruise to the games by river and throw one heckuva party. The riverside restaurants, especially Calhouns, are OK but will be P-A-C-K-E-D and have never been my style. The Vol Walk toward the stadium starts about 3 hours before kickoff and is a spectacle to behold. Make sure to get to your seats early as the pregame show, complete with the ceremonial Running through the "T" is a "tradition unrivaled in college football."

After the game, there is always the Strip (Cumberland Ave), but it's taken a little turn South in recent years. There are a number of cool spots downtown (a manageable walk away), depending on your age.

I hope this helps. I won't know my personal plans until Friday, but if I don't take my boat, you're welcome to stop by my tailgate. Let me know closer to time if you're interested.

Again, enjoy your stay, but GO VOLS!

I agree with the previous post. You can check out Buffale Wild Wings on the strip (Cumberland Avenue) before the game if you want. I'm sure that it's not some people's style. But, I was there before the Cal game and there was a pretty good atmosphere and visiting fans were treated well.

Again, depending on your age. . . .

Downtown Grill and Brewery (Gay Street) -- Decent grub, pool tables, and own beer
Sapphire (next to above) -- small, ex-jewelry store. Expensive drinks. Worth it.
Preservation Pub (Market Square) -- Second to none in beer selection. Usually good local music.
World Grotto -- No idea how to explain this funky place. Just stop by if you end up in Market Square
Nama (downtown) -- Sushi in Knoxville with a New York feel

The Old City -- Manhattans for an older crowd, Hannah's for mid-age, and Blue Cats and Tonic if you're college-aged or younger and are looking for crazy women

Addition: If you're here Friday night, eat at the locals' favorite: Ye Olde Steak House. Not super fancy, but super good. Head down Chapman Highway until you smell the delicious aroma of beef on fire.

Very cool Marshall. Glad you are coming down. Unfortunately, O'Charley's was a solid venue if you like the sports bar scene before a game and is no more open for business. Serving 16 year olds will catch up to you at some point I can only assume.

I actually will miss this game--not making the trip from SC. But at any other home game we tailgate opposite the river off Neyland Drive. There's some good setups and you will find maximum hospitality. Even the Florida fans we allowed to chill at our spot found this to be the case last weekend. Calhoun's is a great gathering spot for visiting fans, with good food and libations, but don't get locked down there. Get out and enjoy all the activities around a gameday in Knoxville. There's nothing like it in my opinion, although most any SEC venue on gameday is a sight to behold.

Welcome to the board.

I remember that QB (Stan something? -- maybe I don't  ). The game was on. Even with him going out it was a close one.

I haven't lived in Knoxvegas for 16 years but here's a few places I used to like -- other VNr's should be able to tell you if they are still around.

Strip - OCI (Old College Inn), Hawkeye's (just of the Strip) probably something else now - it's an old house turned into a restaurant/bar, Tap Room (complete slimy hole-in-the-wall if you're into that kinda thing), Vic and Bills (just kidding VNr's - I was there the night it burned down and I have an alibi). I was there last year and Buffalo Wild Wings was decent pre-game.

Riverfront - Vol Navy --- from Neyland Stadium to Calhouns there will be people partying. Landing and Calhouns have food and bevs.

Old City - no idea what's there now but I know there are bars there. :wink2:

Where are you staying? Knoxvegas is kinda stretched out and depending on where you are there are some good spots.

Enjoy.

You know what I remember about that game that shocked me ... I remember our team still playing with heart even though the game was at hand at the end. Your fans normally sing Rocky Top at the end of games. I was told later that was the first time your band and fans didn't do the song, instead you fans stood up and cheered our players while they walked off the field. Now that my friends is first class ....

Sounds like a great time. I wish I could make the trip but I have to be in WV for my son's football game on Sunday. If there is a next time, I'll be there...or maybe, just maybe, you'll head down to our small stadium...

Welcome Herd fan. I follow this board all the time but have never posted. I grew up in Huntington and watched the Herd at old Fairfield Stadium. A lot of my family went to Marshall but my blood has run orange since my first game at Neyland when Auburn and Bo Jackson came to town and we "waltzed" all over them (The Tennessee Waltz as per the SI cover that week). Sorry to hear O'Charleys is closed - that was a good place to get ready for the game. The Old City was always my favorite place.

Yeah, after our K-State game (I think it's being dubbed as a 'debacle' by some) we've had some negativity on our board, too (well, 'negativity' is putting it mildly). Anyway, I'm really wishing I could get down there now, especially after seeing all your hospitable posts. I had a fantastic time the last time we played you guys, even though we did lose. You guys have the absolute kindest fans I've ever come across in my 11 years of away games. If I recall, your band actually played our fight song pre-game, just another thing I liked about you all.

Again, I really wish I could make it down there - it'd be a huge refresher after going up to the 'hole to play WVU :)crazy:). The only other place I've seen fans that bad was a Va. Tech, which felt more like a prison than a school. That said, I hope we'll meet up again, and if I'm ever coming through town when you guys have a home game, I'll grab an orange hat and stop by (as long as your not playing us).

Thanks again for the kindness and have a safe game!

Hello Vol Nation,
Another HERD fan here making the trip to Neyland Stadium this Saturday. I couldn't make the last game we played, but did visit your board and was treated very kindly.
I have HERD so many good things about the atmosphere at your games and how nice the folks are that I wouldn't miss this one for the world.
My Wife and I will be heading down Friday morning. I let her make the reservations and I think we are staying in Oak Ridge, at the Doubletree on S Illinois Avenue. She was happy that the Smokies will be a backdrop for our room. We tried to get closer but had no luck.
Not sure how long of a drive I'll have from there to the stadium, but I plan on leaving early so we might have time to catch the Vol Navy and see your band, the walk and your guys run through the "T"

I've been looking forward to visiting your great state since the end of last football season. Good luck to you.

PS. Quite a few of us from Herd NAtion making the trip.

You are not too far out. You will have an easy trip the game and back to the hotel. You will find the trip on mostly 4 lane roads and Interstate. 30 mins max.
