What in hell? Tonight it's being reported that for the fourth time in six months a US Navy ship, a destroyer, has collided with another ship. This time it was in the Straights of Mallaca near Singapore. All the other mishaps, except one I think, were also in the Eastern Pacific. Ten sailors are missing tonight, seven were killed a month ago near Japan and last week one sailor was lost.....presumed fell overboard....all in the Pacific. I don't know about loss of life in the other collisions.
Something is Badly wrong.
Now this kind of thing does NOT "happen all the time" as some might suppose. Having spent a career in the military myself, I can report to you that the Navy is very particular about its' ships. And they cop a really bad attitude about it anytime somebody runs into something (like another ship, a reef, or sandbar) with one of them.
After this many incidents in so short a period of time the problem is obvious. And the problem is not a lack of funding. Rather, there are serious training deficiencies in the Navy, especially in the Pacific. Sound, challenging, training particularly in shipkeeping, does not cost money; it saves money and lives.
Expect heads to roll, lots of them....soon, and they should.
