Which is why everyone but misogyny crowd gives her credit for all-time 1-a basketball wins- all the networks, the ncaa, the men's coaches (including Dean Smith)...

I once heard a guy try to say that the women regularly beat the men in shooting contests was that they were secretly given slightly smaller balls. Couldn't resist- I had to tell the guy I was forced to believe him since he was clearly an expert on slightly smaller balls....

I could probably make a pretty good argument for the man they named the football stadium after.

I understand what you are trying to say, but personally I wouldn't care if Pat's wins came in tiddly winks. She deserves the recognition.

I don't deny that she's a great coach. I simply am at a loss as to why anyone who doesn't act as if she's a deity is a sexist. Comparing the the level of competitiveness between the women's game and the men's game is like comparing running for Mayor of Knoxville to a campaign for President.

Not even going to veer into that territory. I honestly don't know why everybody gets so hung up on who's the greatest? It's like comparing apples and oranges and really doesn't matter. Neyland was great . . . Summitt is great.

Cute comment. However, the women DO use a smaller ball.

I do respect Coach Summitt. I'm not sure what more recognition she needs. Name the University after her? The state?

Having spent a fair amount of time with several D1 men's coaches, I can assure you most of them don't give the women's game much of a thought. Other than Calipari and Auriemma, and to a lesser extent Bob Knight and Tara Vander Veer(sp), most of the men's coaches have little or no contact with the women's game.

really??? idk all about that..... i am sure the mens basketball coaches talk to the ladies basketball coaches all the time about basketball... actually i am 100 percent sure..

all i know is if you dont accept the fact she is the most winingest coach. Can you at least except that DEAN SMITH said she deserved the record and was the most winingest coach??

The vast majority of the basketball world doesn't pay any more than passing attention to the women's game. Also, given UT's record in Final Four games against UCONN, I don't think I would be using Geno's ladies as an example of someone Summitt has success against. Again, it's a simple fact, the same 10-15 teams win every year in women's basketball. Part of it is certainly attributable to those schools having great coaches like Summitt, Auriemma, etc. The other driving factor is that most schools, following the interests of their fan base, don't commit resources to their women's program.
How many different Men's teams win every yr? Just curious.

You're a 100% sure. How much time do you spend in Las Vegas during the summer AAU tournaments hanging out with coaches? Auriemma and Calhoun hate each other. That's what led to Geno and Cal becoming pals, their shared antipathy toward Calhoun. During the season, if they're doing their jobs, they don't have times to engage in lengthy conversations with the women's coaches, because of practice and travel. I'm not saying the men's coaches are hostile to the women's game. They generally support their women's counterparts. However, they realize that the jobs are completely different. I'm sure Coach Pearl and Coach Summitt have the occasional discussion, it would be silly for Bruce to not use a resource like her. That said, I'm sure CBP spends infinitely more time talking on the phone to his coaching buddies around the country.

Exactly! How many teams of ANY sports can consistently recruit top talent and put up the numbers of points, wins, championships, etc. year after year? If we're categorizing by gender, let's flip it to the men's sports. Can you name any men's sports coach who has consistently done what Summit does in the women's arena? If you can, I doubt that number is more than fingers on one hand and that is a stretch.

What does them talking to each other have to do with the fact that she has the most wins? Again just curious.

There are certainly a number of programs that are there every year. The difference is that teams shuffle in and out of those positions. Almost every team in the SEC, Big East, ACC, Pac 10, Big Ten, and Big 12 have had some level of success at a point during the last 20 years. That doesn't even take into account the A-10, the Mountain West, etc. The best evidence of what I'm talking about comes during the NCAA Tournaments. Look at the average margin of victory in the first two rounds of the men's tournament compared to the women's games. The women's tournament really doesn't start til you get to the round of 16.

Women's sports in general have not had the resources funneled to them like Men's program over the past 20 yrs, that should make her accomplishment even more noteworthy.

If you think athletic departments, fans, etc. place the same value on winning in women's basketball as they do in the men's game, there's no reason for further discussion. The men's game is more competitive by light years, because a whole heck of a lot more teams are trying to win. Teams don't try to move up to D1 to be eligible for the women's tournament. They're trying to get their hands on some of the cash generated by the Big Dance.

No it shouldn't. UT has made it a priority. Therefore, she has a huge advantage in the resources she has at her disposal in relation to her peers. If you're in business, it's much easier to run a successful store with 10 competitors than it is with 50.

She is the reason they made it a priority, she made it a successful program when Women's got no play at all.

I don't disagree with that at all. She is a fabulous coach. However, she doesn't have to run the gauntlet to be successful that coaches do in the men's game.

Well in my opinion she would be sucessful in the Men's game as well.

Possibly, maybe even probably. She certainly wouldn't win 80+% of her games.
