Look, I know we are 10 days away from football season and, trust me, its foremost on my mind. But I heard on the radio this a.m. that the Gators open basketball practice today in anticipation of some sort of exhibition in Canada. That seems awfully early to me. I remember b-ball Midnight Madness being in November. Do you guys know when UT opens up the gym for first practice?

You can't officially start practice til October the 15th. You can however have open gym without any coaches watching, and have individuals, which is actually a group of 4 players with the coaches for 2 hours a week. Mainly works on fundamentals. I played and last yr was my sr. yr. There's no way they can start early.

Thanks! I was wondering how they could possibly have started that early. I think its good they are getting together for the open gym sessions -- need to get all the rust off.

Ya usually guys play 4 to 5 times a week. Just play pickup, you just hope that the guys want to play and don't just go to goof off.

Or get hurt. I seriously worry that one of these guys is going to get badly hurt this year and that it will affect their NBA chances. If that happens, every time someone says a kid ought to stay in school, they'll just point to that Gator kid that could have been a first rounder but decided to stay.

Teams can take off-season exhibition tours every so many years to places like Europe etc. This is what Florida may be doing and so a real practice may be legal. UT went Europe a few summers ago.

I remember Roy Williams really criticized Donovan awhile back for using those trips as recruiting tools. Specifically remember something about a European trip.
