In 2004, we recruited a Pro-Style QB and a Dual-threat, why you ask?
Because we had an understanding that the non-mobile QB was a problem if we did not have an excellent line and a stout running game. Have we had them in games, YES; have we had them in Seasons, NO.

We had a championship formula that is quite characteristic for most of the National Championships the last few years.....

Take a look at the last 5 years of National Champs and see where we lack in their understanding of the changing nature of CFB.

2002- Ohio State
2003- LSU or USC (depends on whom you ask)
2004- USC
2005- Texas
2006- Florida
2007- LSU

What is the common features of all these teams?

Dual Threat QB? Yes, (now you can say USC did not have a dual-threat qb, you would be correct but until we can match talent with USC, we will compare to our counterparts)

LSU 2003 - actually not only did Mauck run some, but they had Marcus Randel whom was a change of pace.

Texas 2005 - Vince Young
Florida 2006 - Tebow
LSU 2007 - Perriloux

Does any see a pattern and why we should have been crushed when we did not secure a commitment from a Robert Griffith type last year, and no this was not a long post to get RG, it is more about getting up to date with the speed of the SEC.....

UT NEEDS a Dual threat QB and not a small sized one that gets destroyed the first time he runs or can't handle the pressure of the SEC (see BS in 2004)

We are in a similar situation as Joe Gibbs coming back to the NFL and trying the rushing first offense.....

Obviously there are triple option teams, other teams run the wing-t or something similar, but they are not contending every year for a NC. ( and yes, neither are we)

thats why Terrel Pryor was #1 in his class

its all about being a dual QB nowadays.. there wont be many more Eric Ainge's around, unless you have a Peyton Manning or Tom Brady arm.. which is very very rare

well we recruited both james banks and brent schaeffer...and they both turned out to be duds. That happens sometimes with recruits, it's what makes recruiting such a guessing game

Can you put any of these Qbs in the pros? I know Young is there but his stock is sinking fast. Believe it or not, Peyton was not a good thing for our recruitment of college style players. We still believe there is another Peyton out there and the Pro Style one back system Pocket Passer is alive a well in College Division I football. Its a thing of the past similar to Tennessee dominance in the college football ranks.

Just look at Penn State. They have a coach who is in diapers and they might be the best team in the country. Why? because of HD. With a spread offense and a descent Dual threat QB they are the Penn State they used to be. That said, I wouldn't mind keeping Phil around if he started to adopt the spread and got an agile QB here in the near future.
