Actually Dallas is paying him some of that buyout. Whatever Dallas pays him you subtract from his buyout we owe him.

Are you sure about that? I know that is par for the course with assistants but I know in Fulmer's case he got the six mil whether he got another job or not.

I don't know how in the world he got the job at Dallas even if it's just as an assistant coach when he put UT's program in a hellhole.

Real VOL fans don't throw people under the bus. The man tried his best here but things did not work out. He even tried things that looked logical to many at the time that he is now getting blamed for. For example, who could have thought that Sunseri coming out of NC winning program that put all those LB's in the NFL could end up being so bad. And when it comes to offense, there is no doubt he build one of the best offenses in the school history (in 3 years), and recruited some exciting offensive talent along the way (we are still benefiting from the o-line he recruited). Stop the hate and move on - Butch is doing a great job now but Dooley left him a much better situation than he found after Kiffin.

ill agree on parts of this but ill never agree about not throwing dumpster dooley under the bus.

It was a train wreck in terms of results (which are obviously most important). But that does not mean that Dooley did not do a lot of good things to leave the program in better shape than he found it. Also, even if he was the conductor of the train wreck as you say, that should not give people right to insult and ridicule him - he tried but things did not work out as we (and him) wanted so people should move on (if you really have to hate someone better to focus your anger on Kiffin who actually earned the right to be hated).
I'm amazed that on this forum people are even going as far as ridiculing Fulmer who won the NC for us (the ignorance and stupidity on this forum can be off the chart).

Chill out, Barbara.

Because people who understand football (pros unlike emotional college fans) know that he left the program in better shape than he found it. Those same people also understand that you can sometimes work hard and do/try everything logical and there is still no guarantee you will quickly succeed in terms of W's and L's (especially in SEC). Anyhow, it's not an accident that he got that particular position at Dallas since at UT he has proven he can recruit and coach WR's if nothing else (he played one in college so probably knows most about it in terms of X's and O's - which he is apparently proving in Dallas).

Which parts don't you agree with and what good does it do to UT football if you throw Dooley or anyone else who is no longer here under the bus?

I call BS on most of this.

He never beat a ranked opponent. Fact.

His won loss record got worse each season. Fact.

He lost to Kentucky. Fact.

He lost to Vanderbilt. Fact.

He couldn't keep assistant coaches. Fact.

Wonder what the reason was for those facts?

Because he sucks as a HC. Fact.

Anyone defending Dooley seriously needs to have their head examined.

One place he never was...in top recruits living rooms, or high school, or football games...

Hunter, Patterson, D Rogers, and o-linemen were not top recruits?
But I do agree what you are saying is true during his last year when he decided to spend all his time trying to salvage his job and try to win at least one or two big games (so he decided to spend all his time preparing for the games - reportedly even started attending defense meetings to try to help Sunseri).

Some of you guys take Dooley's failure way too personal... and final. Maybe as you grow up you'll have to deal with a big failure in life that requires you to get back up, dust yourself off, and try to succeed.

Most people at some point in life will run into problems that are just bigger than they are... that includes most successful people.

The guy inherited a train wreck. There may be a handful of coaches anywhere that could have turned it around... Dooley wasn't one of them. Had he inherited a situation similar in roster and stability to what Jones inherited then he probably survives longer. I doubt he ever could have gotten UT to the SEC CG and believe that Jones will... but he very likely could have gotten UT back to that 2nd tier like they were for the last half of Fulmer's career.

Anyone defending Dooley seriously needs to have their head examined.

Telling the "truth" doesn't constitute defending anyone... except the truth itself.

Dooley was hired. He tried. He was overwhelmed by the challenge. He failed. He was fired.

In no way shape or form does that doom him to a life of failure... if you think it does then it is YOU that needs to have his head examined.

Let's take Lord Saban himself. After FOUR seasons at Mich St he was on the verge of being fired. He was one game over .500 against weak competition and pretty much hated by much of their fanbase. He had one good season and was smart enough to bail for LSU where he became what he is.

He was smart enough to realize he needed a "reset" to his career. Dooley is getting his and may well learn from his failures and become a successful coach.

He was a failure of epic proportions. Could not run a program, could not manage players, could not do anything. Keep up the hard work, you're rolling.
