After watching Oakland light us up a couple weeks ago and today watching a 1-9 Austin Peay team shoot over 70% against us in the 2nd half, I can't believe all the pre-season stories I hear about this team not even picking up a basketball the first week of practice because all they worked on was defense. If that's true, I'm really worried either this staff can't coach defense or these players don't listen.

I have been a little concerned since the first game of the season with the inability to gaurd without fouling. I have heard Martin say numerous times that if you cannot play defense you will not play for him and after today I suspect a few will be finding a seat on the bench.

Totally new concept for some of pearls players. Defense, that is.

How many games were *****ed about that pearls team should have won and did not?

Give them time, it will get much much better.

I will have to disagree there was a thread on here awhile ago comparing Pearls defensive stats to Martins and Pearl was better in every catagory and not to mention Pearl played a tougher schedule.

But with that being said Pearl is no longer here and this is Martins team and what I hope does not happen is that for every loss we find an excuse much like the football team.

Yeah, where are all the fools that tried to convince me yesterday that this team had played good defense this year?

I do not think they played good D the last 2 games but we must also remember the season is young and CM has time to coach them up. I can accept this loss if the team gets better from it.

The players he has were also recruited for a different style so I do not think we can get an accurate assesment of CM this year. But I am in agreement with you that Pearl never got enough credit for his defense.

Very true. I just find it ironic that their are people who actually believe this team has played respectable defense this year. It has cost them in four of their five losses. We better hope they improve, or it could be a long season.

UT never lost to as bad of a team under Pearl as they did today. A 1-9 Austin Peay team came into TBA and won. There are no excuses for today's loss. None. Not Pearl leaving the team with limited talent or exam week or some other bullsh*t excuse. We should've beaten Peay with our 2nd string today.

Our defense has been non-existent so far pretty much.

This team has to decide if they want to play hard for the entire game and win some winnable games or take plays off and have an inexcusable loss like they did today. They can either learn from this or be obstinate and continue to lose to bad teams.

What pissed me off the most was Maymon and Hall were dominating and then Peay goes to a zone and we never adjusted. They didn't get the ball enough. Blame Golden or Washpun, but the coaching staff needs a helluva lot of blame. The team got a lead, thought they had it in the bag and then lost their intensity and let a bad team beat them. They didn't play any defense in the 2nd half.

Our defense has been directly responsible for 4 of our 5 losses; Duke being the exception. In those four losses, our offense has played well enough to win the game, but our defense has been awful in at least one phase, be it opponents FG%, defensive rebounding, or creating TOs and opportunities.

I just can't believe that there are some on this board who really believe that this team has played well on defense. Aside from the games we have lost, we have won some games with unbelievable shooting from outside that has masked some otherwise pretty average defensive performances.

As I stated in another thread, this team has held exactly one team to under 40% shooting from the field this season, and that was a D-2 Chaminade team.
