Which incoming recruits will start as freshmen?

The title pretty much says it all...

I'm curious to see who will come in and pretty much start from the get go...I'm also interested in seeing if any of our recruits earn a starting spot over someone else.

With Raijon Neal graduating, I could see Jalen Hurd getting some work at RB with Marlin Lane (If they keep him at RB that is)

I hope we get to see Vic Wharton return punts and kicks... He is a track speedster and it seems like I am always reading that he returned a punt or a kick to the house for his HS team.

Helm and/or Wolf have a very good chance at starting just because we are dying for help at TE.

All the JUCO's will likely start - Lambert at DE, Blair at OL and Pearson at WR.

Bates and Weatherd could both start or at least see playing time at linebacker.

And Todd Kelly and D'Andre Payne should see time at DB.

Unfortunately, way too many will be needed in the 2 deep. Some may have to start. best scenario will be getting 4 or 5 more JC guys that can be plugged in instead of using these freshman.

the youth, inexperience and schedule will mean another 5 or 6 win season in 2014.. best scenario would be to redshirt every freshman so they could hit training table and weight room. Butch mentioned in the past week how much weight work the 21 freshman they are using this year are missing out on. Stunts development.

for those that might not be aware, redshirted freshman are able to lift 4 days a week while those playing might be able to lift one or two days. this is due to time they are required to be working on game prep and class work. physically they just can't mature as fast

The only incoming recruits that will start will be the JUCO guys I'd imagine. Payne or Gaulden might be able to take the nickel spot. With Sapp gone, we are going to need a good cover LB and I don't know very much about our back-ups in that situation, so Bates might start day 1 since that is a big strength of his. I expect Hurd to be co-starter with Lane since he'll be here in January.

Later in the season it's possible others crack the starting rotation, but for now I think that's all we can expect.

The EEs will be the most likely starters and specialist, but starting? I would think that all of them would see early playing time because of why they were recruited. Some RS will be strategically used to add depth. The ones that get here early and embrace the strength and conditioning program will be the ones we will see first.

Kelly and Bates, I have a feeling will be the leaders of this D in a couple years. Every time i see Bates, he is all business.

I don't think many people on here realize the jump from high school to SEC football. There are a rare few players that can come in on day one and be a dominate force . Most players you see doing well as true freshman are skill players . They already have the speed to compete at this level. Lineman and linebackers might have the speed and ability but not the size and strength yet. It usually takes a couple of years of growth and strength programs for them to compete.
If you think that we can throw a bunch of freshman on the field and compete at at championship level you are sadly mistaken . Bringing in this top level talent is the first step. The next step is getting them ready to compete in the SEC .

This. So much this. If you guys think that most of the freshmen will start, you're crazy. Certainly all of the JUCOs will either start or get significant pt. Two or three true freshmen may start, but I think it's unlikely.

Breaking it down by position...

DL: Any Jucos we take play
LB: Maggit, Weatherd, JRM (Bates/Other FR backup)
DB: Randolph, Sutton, ?,?

OL: Again, Jucos
RB: Lane, Other RB's, Hurd
WR: Croom, Pig, North, Pearson
TE: ???
QB: Dobbs/Ferguson

Honestly, I think the TEs and Secondary are the two most questionable positions.

We need the speed more than anything else at this point. It is also more than the two deep….it is a special teams issue as well.

All the JUCO transfers committed so far will probably play. Of those, Blair has the best chance to win a starting spot (at OT). As for the freshmen, anybody who can get the job done as a DB can win a starting job. There is also room for a freshman to start at an LB position, most believing Bates is in line, but look out for Mouhon.

I can't believe that more than 3 Freshmen can start and get to a bowl game. I think best case scenario is that the JUCOS start and the freshment get into sec shape...

I think McNeil has really struggled. He seems to have all the measurables, but the lightbulb hasn't completely gone off yet.

I agree. he is worse than last year if anything. Missing a bunch of tackles every game

I cannot believe any of you are hoping/thinking that Brian Randolph gets recruited over.... smh. Our horrible defense last year... Randolph gone. Remember the first half of Alabama when Randolph sat out? Yeah... you'll be seeing ALOT more of that if he's out of the game. Like it or not, Randolph makes our defense work; he is the captain. Coverages breakdown every single play that he isn't on the field. Ridiculous you guys want a freshman All-American off of the field.

Other than Sutton...there is a possibility that the entire secondary just got recruited over. Don't sleep on Gaulden either.

Moseley and Payne benefit from EE. Moseley and Elliott B are good RS candidates. Evan gets a shot on O
Gaulden, Kelly, McDowell along with Payne will be in the 2 deep rotation. Payne is a lock-down corner who as an EE could challenge for a starting nod. However, to begin the '14 season Sutton, McNeil, Randolph and Coleman (Nickel) will be our starters, IMO.

Was in Greensboro last week end, but did not get to go to Mosley's game. His team beat a team they had not beaten in four years. He had two TD passes n the first half and, according to the newspaper, had a great game on defense and gained almost 100 yards on the game. He plays almost all of every game and is a star on both side of the ball. He appears to be wirely strong and may not need a red shirt.

TE: Daniel Helm and Etham Wolfe will come in and make immediate impacts. I look for Helm to start opposite Branisel game 1.

That is a good point. TE has been almost nonexistent.
