I dont see anybody other than gruden, of course, that has a bigger upside than chavis. Considering the actual legitimate candidates that we would consider. But Im sure yall will fill me in.

Chavis is never going to be a HC. He doesn't like the media. He doesn't really recruit much. He's just not a HC.

Greg Roman, Hue Jackson, Bo Pelini are all more than capable. JMO Really like the idea of Roman or Jackson, heck maybe Kippy Brown, he deserved the job before.

Great idea...If you want to have the worst recruiting classes in the SEC.

I can't figure why people are bringing up Chavis....They are just praying to return to the past...He's GONE...Fulmer is GONE...Randy Sanders is GONE....Cutcliffe GONE!..Damn guys get over it...Time to move forward and not live in the past...Chavis is NOT a head coach nor will he ever be..He would be an absolutely HORRIBLE hire as a head coach...Probably worse than Dooley...So please, just stop it and get a REAL list of candidates you want as head coach...It's gotten ridiculous...I'm listening to the animal right now and some of you calling in need therapy..It's amazing lol

People bring Chavis up for the same reasons they still toy with Fulmer and cutcliffe. He is nostalgic and reminds us of the glory days. But none of them are coming back and I would lose all respect for Phil if he came back as a desperation hire after the way the university, fans and boosters shat on him.

Your either young or didnt follow UT during the Fulmer era. Chavis hates to recruit, isnt a media person or very personable, no way he could lead a team with 100+ players and however many coachs there are under him. He will never be a HC. Thats why he would never go to a school that he actually had to recruit at and wasnt surrounded by great recruiters like he was at UT and LSU.

Im not looking to the past. I agree that fulmer is a terrible idea. But if chavis wanted to be HC, and he prob doesnt, he would be as good as any on these lists. He may need some media skills, but we dont need a public speaker, we need a defense. None of these could field a defense better. You want a tn man....he is. The others are not. You wanna keep your offensive staff? Good luck getting a HC to leave his staff behind. You wanna save a little money...he would be cheap. He now even has contacts in louisiana to help with recruiting. None of these other candidates have the upside he has as a whole. His drawback is being in the spotlight and HC experience. Tressel, petrino, fulmer, and davis wont happen period. Pelini and fedora cant touch his defense, SEC knowledge and contacts. Smart is a dc with no exp or tn ties. Where are any of those better?

You guys are crazy. I'm a Chavis booster and it has nothing to do with wanting to relive the past. The man is the CURRENT DC at a perennial national title contender--LSU. He was just recommended for the job by Miles--the LSU head coach, winner of one or two national titles. I don't think Miles did that just be to polite. I've been around Chavis--he is a great leader and motivator--and he is FINE with the press. Where does that come from? He may not have had a great desire to be a head coach in the past--I'm don't know--but so what? Maybe he does now. He may not be a great recruiter, but so what: Staffers recruit. He's a UT guy, he knows defense, big-time, and he leads. Pelini would be better, I grant--but Roman ain't coming here and Jackson is a longtime nfl vagabond whose pro coaching career is fading. Please. If you ask me: Do I want some little known head coach with no ties to the SEC or Chavis, I pick Chavis every time. He would be an excellent pick right now. I love the way some here poo-poo a guy who was snatched up by LSU the minute Fulmer was sacked.

Im in my 40s and lived here all my life. Some of yall contradict everything you say. You run after cutcliffe but turn your nose up at chavis? Did you watch the damn games in the 90s? We won a NC with Tee Martin and lost to Memphis with Peyton Manning. The offense was irrelevant. The defense was what kept us at the elite level. Thats not even in question. He has been named as the best assistant coach of the last 1/4 century and is widely recognized as one of the top DC's in the nation.....every yr. We could keep Chaney and his tn assistants like graham. You would have a great OC and a great DC. I dont see the downside at all.

Arky has the big hire so far this year.

A Pelini hire would put us on par with them.

This would be avery hire. He has the qualifications Hart set out.

He has SUPER BOWL ring from the 49ers,
SEC ties with a BCS Championship ring from LSU.

I say hire him tonight. much bettere than Gundy or Strong.

Chief will be nothing but a d coordinator..I honestly can't remember hearing one big name recruit he got here or at LSU.

All of them are.

Where are they better? SEC exp......nope. Better at building a defense......nope. More ties to TN so they wont run-off.....nope. Better recruiters.......nope, at least not enough to matter. So where?

I am not at all interested in the past. Im interested in not reliving the last 4 yrs.

You've got to be kidding. Look it up. While your at it look and see how many nfl defensive players came from him. You'll be shocked. Shocked.

It is well known he is a terrible recruiter...most of the NFL players he coached Fulmer got or one of the other assistants got...You never see his name next to a recruits as the recruiter....Do your research

Do you think those defensive recruits came here for fulmer? No they came to get nat'l exposure and to the nfl. Whose defenses have more players in the nfl than chavis. Chavis went to LSU. Does LSU have a bad*ss defense? How bout Tn? Fulmers on the couch, cutcliffe to powerhouse Duke, and sanders to UK. Now, you tell me what made those teams in the 90s. And why is chavis the only part of that staff that is still elite at what he does? How has LSU compared to Bama lately? If you dont like the suggestion then thats ok but dont try to convince me that all these leftover 30 yr old rookie coaches in weak conferences are so much better.

Another upside to Chavis :
You know exactly what your gonna get. A top 3 SEC defense most every yr. No guessing game.

Our offense, at least passing, doesnt need rebuilding and we can keep that staff in place.

Recruiting is typically done by position coaches unless a big time recruit needs nudging.

So somebody please explain to me this terrible downside to Chavis. In real tangible things....not just phantom feelings.

Assuming he would even be interested.
