Yesterday, two very similar plays happened in the FLA/Arky game and the LSU/Bama game, and the referees made rulings that were contradicting. I was wondering if someone could help me understand which crew got it wrong, or if there is some exception that I don’t understand. Here’s what happened.
At the end of regulation during the Florida game, the Gators got a first down with 8 seconds left, tackled in bounds, no timeouts left. They then received a penalty for illegal substitution as all the players and coaches panicked before the final snap. The refs ruled that there would be no 10 second runoff because the Gators got a first down on the previous play and the clock was stopped. Instead, the ref said he would spot the ball, then start the clock on his whistle.
Well, in the LSU game at the end of the first half, LSU got a first down and was tackled in bounds. They had one timeout left. They did not call timeout, but got called for a false start. The ref said that LSU elected to take their final timeout rather than have a 10 second runoff. So why did LSU have to burn a timeout to avoid a 10 second runoff, but Florida did not have a 10 second runoff when they were out of timeouts? Which crew was wrong? Or is there something I’m missing? Thanks to anyone who tries to help me understand, because I was extremely frustrated trying to figure this out yesterday.
