Any predictions? Those of you that live in the state know a lot more than I do about the current political landscape. So, Republican or Democrat?

Locally? I don't know. I think TN will go under the McCain column as of right now.

Tennessee is red as hell. Unless Barack Obama practices with the Vols this summer, McCain will win by a lot.

If Al Gore couldn't carry Tennessee it's hard to believe Obama would. That said, I think this election will be a referendum on the war and the economy...so Tennessee will go democratic IMO.

It's hard to know what willl happen. The continued doom and gllom re: the economy probably helps Obama but I am not seeing that poor economy reflected in people's behavior. You still can't get in the front door of Starbucks in the morning. The high end retailers are not closing shops. The traffic is as bad as always. etc.

It's hard for me to believe that if Tennessee didn't go Democrat in 2004 that it's going to do it in 2008 for Barack Obama. The state has been red for the past 50 years with the exception of voting for Bill Clinton plus it's exactly the kind of state Obama is having trouble with in the Primaries (he lost TN by 14 points).

I've seen few polls where McCain is ahead though:

PBS had a special last weekend on Bush Sr, it was very interesting. Very underrated president.

I bring it up because they interviewed Colin Powell, Jim Baker, etc and they discussed the first gulf war, and why they didn't go into Baghdad.

They both said, they used to give speeches, and they were always asked why they didn't go into Baghdad. They both said they aren't asked that anymore. The whole program was very telling.......

The recession in the early 90s might have still done him in, but IMO Bush would probably have been a two term President if not for Ross Perot having a vendetta and a lot of money to carry it out with.

Those kinds of things are interesting to think about. If not for Ross Perot, Bill Clinton would have probably been thrown on the Democratic scrap heap right next to Mike Dukakis and the idea of Hillary Clinton being anything other than a divorced attorney would seem preposterous right now.

I agree with this, and your follow up post as well. Of course, history may say that but for Ralph Nader, Al Gore would've been elected in 2000.
