Which would you pick?

Hey, we can compare it to College Football. Extra practices even though a team goes to a lesser bowl will help toward the following year.

New Orleans Bowl=NIT

JMX, no need to bash dude. You have had your fair share of stupid posts. This is just a simple question: a championship or an appearance? Winning on a lower lever or losing on a bigger level? You may get more exposure by the media by being in the NCAA tourney, you may not. There are less teams in the NIT so there is more spotlight to go around, but like I said the NCAA is on a bigger level.

I agree hv, it's a legitimate question.

That's not true. A whole lot of the teams that make it into the tourney are automatic bids from winning their conference. A whole lot of these teams wouldn't be recognized by the NIT selection team. Alot of the teams in the NCAA tournament wouldn't make it into the NIT so it's NCAA or bust for some of them.

I will say it like this: I would rather be in the ncaa tourney then go to the nit. But if we won the nit and lost in the first round of the ncaa, I would be more proud of the NIT team then the Ncaa tourney team..

I disagree with that. The idea that this team with a 1st year coach might end up in the tournament for the first time in 5 years is simply amazing. I don't even care what happens once we get there.

But was he refering to this year? I thought it was more of a random question like any year type thing? Cause if it was this year than the ncaa tourney would be something to be really proud of. I was just thinking of a random time.... stupid me.

I wasn't talking about this year. I'd be disappointed if we didn't make it to the NCAA this year. I was referring to a year that we win say 17-18 games and get snubbed.

I would take a NIT Championship over a 1st round loss in the NCAA. To me, it's not really an accomplishment making the NCAA unless you make it to sweet 16. Look at Gonzaga for instance, they made the NCAA a lot in the past, but nothing was ever said about it until they went really deep into the tourney. Years ago McNeese St. and Austin Peay went quite a bit, but no hype came out of it. I'm not saying that the NIT is anywhere near as popular as the NCAA's but it is still a decent tourney and winning it is still pretty good.

I think it really depends when you ask the question and what team you are talking about.

Personally, I'd take an NCAA tournament appearance any day, but I can see how an up and coming program might use an NIT run as a springboard.

I think the answer is pretty clear, but it's a legitimate question.

The conference champions with automatic invitations are part of what makes the NCAA tournament great. Pretty much every D1 conference gets to offer up their best so no one can argue about who is really #1 once the tourney is over. IMO the NIT steers clear of the smaller schools in an attempt to try and maitian false credibility for their tourney. The NIT always seems to pick name recoginition over record which means a lot of big universities who have bad years wind up in the NIT. The NIT is to the NCAA what the Humanitarian Bowl is to the Sugar Bowl. They are both basketball tournaments. The distinction ends there.

winning the NIT is not a championship

It's sort of like winning the Great Alaska Shootout . . . nice for a couple of days, but a month later nobody can remember who won.

Definitely NCAA, who cares about being the 65th best team?

Alright.....checkerboard...hv...let's settle this in a manly fashion.....

Spud guns at ten paces.

Winner gets courtside seats for the Lady Vols in the tourney.

Loser gets a t-shirt from the 2003 NIT champ.

(who was it, by the way?)

"u are the one who asked the dumb question"

I dunno...that "dumb question" comment sure sounded a lot like the proverbial "shot across the bow". Then again, maybe it's just me.

And I wasn't trying to start a board war, I was trying to put a humorous spin on an absurd topic.

My apologies. Henceforth, I will endeavor to ignore obvious puns.

Actually, I would say winning the GAS, Maui, or the preseason NIT all bring more prestige to a program than winning the NIT. Any appearance in the NIT, regardless of result, is the result of failing to meet the primary goal of any decent program.

Yet another board topic turns to blows! To get back to the topic, NCAA tournament. Although, based on the past, I would take anything over the way its been lately. One more thing, I don't really care for the star ratings. They aren't used by every poster so you really can't tell how good or bad a thread really is. Just my :twocents:
