I hear these guys on the Sports Animal talking about thugs and I am confused and frustrated by the broad and ignorant way in which they say "We don't need no thugs, kick em all off the team, I'll hang up and listen".
I am a white male with no tattoos and I have never used an illegal drug in my life.
That said, I do not think having a tattoo makes people a thug at all. I will agree that you are a scary person and indicating you will not be a good representative of the University if you have a prison tattoo on your neck or a gang tattoo (which Tyler I think inadvertently did when he honored his Father with the tear drops), but tats do not mean a person is bad or good.
Fighting? These athletes at UT are for the most part big guys who get if they get in fights really hurt someone. Robbing someone is thug, getting in a fight at a party is/was part of college. It is dumb, but it is not "assault and battery". People bringing criminal charges into simple fist fights are losers.
Drugs? We have serving Congressmen who sold drugs in college. President Obama did not just smoke pot, he used harder drugs! I hear people saying "if you smoke pot you are a thug". The generation preceding mine is the largest group of hypocrites ever when it comes to drugs. Many of the people who want to take away the voting rights of those who possess certain drugs used them when they were younger. Many of them also are every bit as big of substance abusers as todays youth, they just use doctors to get Vicodin, Ambien, Darvoset, Atavan, Prozac, Adderal etc. Get up, get down, numb pain, calm yourself, they are the respectable drug addicts, but they are doing the same thing just without the fear of getting caught.
The way someone speaks? Some dialects of broken English can hamper your success, but I have known people of all races who speak sub standard English. If you come from certain places especially if that is what is spoken in the home, it is very difficult to sound different.
I want to be proud of the athletes who represent the school I graduated from. I think that people who cry "thug" often seem racist to me. I am more upset by the DUI's of some of the players than I am of some weed being in the car. I cannot countenance liars and so I want Brian Williams off the team, but Cameron Tatum and Marvin Goins should be welcomed back with open arms and people should save this "thug" language for guys who actually deserve it like Ramar Smith.
