Who is the biggest over-achieving Vol in history?

Here are some recent ones that come to mind:

Arian Foster--he was a 3 stat out of HS and I think he has the 2nd most rushing yards in UT history and is one of the best RBs and players in the NFL.

Denarius Moore--he was also a 3 star out of HS and thought to be the 2nd half of a package deal with Lennon Creer. He ended up being a heck of a receiver for UT and had a huge senior season. He's also doing well in the NFL as the number 1 receiver for the Raiders.

Nick Reveiz--he wasn't the most physically gifted guy to play for UT and is not playing in the NFL like the other two guys. But he got the most out of the talent he did have and ended up being a good LB for UT and a big-time leader for our defense and team as a whole. I wish we had a guy like him to lead our team every year.

I'm not saying they are the top over-achievers in the history of UT. They are just some of the recent ones who came to mind and were all very good players for UT.

Hmm, Wouldnt have thought of Foster that way and I didnt know he was a three star. Sound like a solid nomination given he has accomplished so much in the pros...

Dale Jones' teammate, Chris White, also deserves consideration here. A fifth-year senior, he didn't start until an injury-riddled secondary at the outset of the 1985 season gave him the opportunity to start against UCLA in the season opener. He responded with three interceptions and, for the season, amassed a nation-leading nine interceptions and achieved All-American honors. I am surprised it took this long for someone to say Chris White. He is the biggest over achiever hands down.

Jason Witten deserves a look just because he was originally recruited as a defensive end. To end up being one of the best tight ends of all time qualifies for an overacheiver IMO

JJ McClesky springs to my mind. Played WAY bigger than he was at DB.

I can't imagine a strong argument for anyone else. Dickey had a great moment. Rick Clausen had a great moment.

J.J. McClesky was a freakin Karns Beaver! That's a tougher obstacle to overcome than a disability!

Played with/against JJ in intramural football out of Reese Hall in 87-88. Was absolutely shocked with what he did with Vols after walking on. He gets my vote.

Without question it has to be Billy Ratliff. He single handedly got us in the NC by bull rushing Burlsworth into Stoerner causing Stoerner to fumble and then he recovered the ball.

Bill Duff also comes to mind.

Tony Thompson filled in nicely for one year

This is who I was going to say. He was a 3rd string tailback and led the SEC in rushing (not too shabby of an offensive line I might add).

Chris White was special; I'd forgotten about him.

JJ McClesky and Thomas "TD" Woods were special as well. TD lit it up at the NY Jets for a while.

Dale Jones, Chris White and Daryl Dickey. Along with Tim McGee, they were the heart and soul of the '85 Sugar Vols, which truly deserve to be labeled as the most overachieving No. 4-ranked team in school history. The defense was porous as a sieve before Tony Robinson was lost to a season-ending injury; they then grew fangs and became one of the most rock-ribbed defensive squads in the country. The 1986 Sugar Bowl was their crowning achievement and remains, to this day, the single most inspired performance I have ever witnessed from a Tennessee foorball team.
