Who is the biggest over-achieving Vol in history?

Reggie White was the low end of a package deal. I think he takes the cake. He was supposed to be the Nash Nance.

Uhhh, your joking I hope. Charles Morgan was the other in that "package deal". I was a year behind him in HS and we used to play them. Everyone knew RW was the monster. Morgan was awesome too, but not mature enough to handle discipline at the next level. Quit UT and went to the Canes and either got hurt or quit on CHS too. Coached little league with CM a few years ago and he said he shoulda stayed put and the rest.

The main point is RW was never anywhere near the NN expectations. He was fully expected to go beast mode and did immediately. Dude was a monster on the BB court too. About 6-4 260 with decent skills inside. Howard High had like 5 BBall players who went D1 in hoops or FB.

My vote for the thread ... Zac Rodgers senior year. I never expected that guy to do what he did last year. Will probably get some kinda look from the league! :eek:hmy:

Or how @ Morgan Cox.

Andy Kelly comes to mind. I don't know how highly rated he was coming out of high school, but I remember him taking over for Sterling Hinton and kicking arse!

That is not right! Reggie White was a much bigger prospect than charles morgan. Charles has some success as a freshman got the big head and went to another school and did very little.

Jeff Powell. Travis Stephens. Tony Thompson. Al Wilson (because he basically coached the team too). Mose Phillips. Greg Amsler. Vince Moore. Mark Jones. Prentiss Waggner. Ronald Davis. Jermaine Copeland. Denarious Moore. Chester Ford. Nick Reveiz. Bill Duff. Erick Westmoreland. Dane Bradshaw. Chris Lofton. JJ McCluskey. Gabril Wilson. Eric Berry. Peyton Manning. Tee Martin. Dale Carter. Alvin Harper. Condredge Holloway. George Caffego. John Ward. Gus Manning. Haywood Harris.

I LISTED THE ABOVE FOR EFFORT MEANING OVER ACHIEVED AND NOT NECESSARILY BASED ON TALENT. SOME HAD GREAT TALENT, SOME NOT SO MUCH. BUT ALL HUSTLED AND GAVE THEIR ALL FOR IT.

I wonder how highly recruited Johnny Majors was? I mean that guy gave it all for TN.

Edit: He saved the program in the 80's to.

Not sure if serious. If serious you better think about this again.

He was H. S. All American. He was regarded as something of an underachiever in his first three years at UT. In his senior season he absolutely exploded and was a consensus first team All-American.

The U. He actually did fairly well at Miami once he arrived, but he was no Reggie White (no one has ever been one).

Not sure how Nick Reviez overacheived?? He was a decent player who played decent. Great guy in the locker room and off the field but on the field all I remember is him crying on one knee after he missed an easy tackle in the backfield against LSU.

it wasnt an easy tackle - watch the replay on youtube --

Condredge Holloway not only played with a lot of heart and determination he went on to have a solid career in the CFL. Condredge was also a fantastic baseball player and could have went pro in that sport as well if he had wanted to.

You all dissapoint me. Al Wilson was a 2-star RB/FB coming out of high school. Became a all pro LB and probably was one of the best of all time if he hadn't had the career ending injury.

Tony Thompson gets my vote--even beyond JJ. He was little and didn't have the moves of T. Stephens, but he was able to carry the load as a TB in the SEC. I still remember his 40 carries against Miss. State.

Mark Hovanic has to get a vote, too.

And, concerning the Charles Morgan thing--he was supposed to be a better athlete than Reggie coming out of high school--at least that's what most folks who knew them and graduated from Howard will tell you. He had a monster game against Alabama as a true freshman, but some coach screamed at him and reamed him over his performance and he did quit.

I wouldn't consider Dale Jones to be an overachiever--nor Chris White. If you played with them or know either one of them personally you wouldn't say that.

Jones made the first three tackles of the game in his first game as a starter against Pitt--and that was lining up against Bill Fralic I seem to remember. :salute:

I had to reply below as soon as I read this but then read all of the other posts calling this poster out. A little fact in the mix never hurts...

This is all sorts of wrong... Reggie White was certainly not the "low end of a package deal". Reggie was a highly recruited player coming out of high school, an All America selection no less. They didn't have star rating back then, but if they did, he would have been a 5 star recruit.

Charles Morgan was Reggie's high school teammate who came with him to UT. They were extremely close friends in high school and beyond. It really hurt Reggie when Charles left the team; however, their bond remained as Reggie became the god father to Charles' son Jonathan.

DE in the 90's, I think his name was Will Overstreet. He was heart and soul and gave his all. I doubt he was a highly regarded recruit.

Tony Robinson. He brought Tennessee Football back from obscurity by beating NO. 1. Auburn and Bama in Birmingham and infused the confidence in that 85 team that made them perhaps the most love Vol football team of all time. We need another skinny kid like him for this group

Al Wilson was a 4-5 star rated safety/LB coming out of HS. He may have even been a HS AA his senior year unless I'm remembering wrong. Although he played FB and LB his sr year, the only school that recruited him as RB was Notre Dame. He didn't overachieve, everyone expected him to be awesome.

The TB on that JCM team, Wesley Barlow, was also heavily recruited. Not sure what happened to him, he may have had grade issues.
