Just been thinking recently: For the Vols to succeed and take that next step, who is the most importantly player?

I go with McRae. I believe our post play will be top notch. Golden was good last year, and I believe will get better. We need a wing scorer...someone who can give us offensive spacing. McRae being able to shoot consistently from outside gives us that.

What say you VN?

I'll go with Golden. He was too up-and-down last year. If we can get consistently good play from him we could be dangerous.

PG play is essential to any championship caliber team. My votes with Golden....

UH why we talking basketball? Football comes first!!!!!the most important player to me is all the players in being a team player in any sport. Players builds a team which makes team players. Team players win championships. The most important vol for next yr is the one that wears orange and steps on the court or field which means everyone TN player. Go Vols!

I really think if Richardson can step up and become more of a factor then it would go a long way

I think I'll probably roll with McRae as well. If golden puts improves just slightly, same for Maymon, and stokes takes the next step as he should then all 3 are very good options and all sec caliber.

That leaves the 2 and 3 spots for this question really. The guy with the highest ceiling is no doubt Jordan McRae. If he somehow can figure it out and have the all around and consistent game, he also is sec caliber and NBA worthy IMO.

If Jordan can become that guy, then either skylar or josh just have to be solid fundamental role players and well be very good. As I said I think we have 3 very good ones in golden Maymon and stokes. If we can get Jordan to take that next step I think this team could go very far and be top 15 the majority of the year.

Now do I think jordy can make that step? I've been looking for it for entirely too long now and it has yet to happen, so I'm not holding my breath, but I am crossing my fingers.

These kind of questions always end up being about interpretation. I see most people, including the OP, are answering based on who needs to individually step up his game. The original question, however, is who is the most important player and for that I have to go with Golden. Based on last year and what is coming in, their is no bigger drop off in talent and experience than between Golden and whomever his backup is. At every other position on the floor there is genuine competition for playing time. Not so at PG. if Golden is injured or his play slips from last year, it will be a long season.

I admit, I also interpreted it as which player needs to improve/have success and thus I went with McRae. As you said though, if this is about who is in general most important to the team, I agree you'd 100% have to go with golden no doubt about it.

Reading my mind.

I go with Golden followed by McRae. More consistency from the PG will help everyone, and if we have a true consistent threat on the perimeter, it should open up the inside a bit.

I saw that in his post ZJC actually said who is the most important to this team taking the next step. Maybe the poll wouldn't let him put all that. I do agree with you guys that McRae's improvement is vital to this team having greater success than last year. I think that Stokes is the key to whether the season is just great or something to remember/historical. Stokes has "take a team on your back" type talent and if he lives up to it, this season could be special.

Just based on last year alone, when Golden played, and he was his normal effective self, we were a very good team. When golden struggled, or was off the floor, our offense was anemic at best. I don't believe he is our best player, but if Golden can improve and be more consistent I believe we have a shot to be very good next year.

Richardson and Mcrae are also very important because of how thin we are on the wing. We will need someone on the wing to provide some scoring this year.

I agree with McRae. Our post play will be very good. Golden will be solid. But if McRae steps up and provides a serious threat, we will be a very difficult team to stop.

I, like you, will go with McRae, under the premise that we mostly know what to expect from Golden, Maymon, and Stokes. The two off-guard positions are giant question marks, and McRae has the most dynamic and natural ability to be a difference-maker from one of those two positions. So, assuming we get what we expect to get from the three aforementioned players, and McRae can put his game together consistently and grow up, he could really be the difference in this team being an 18 win team, and a 22-25 win team.
