Lets take a break from the Pearl BS and talk actual basketball. Who do you guys admire in the college game?

I'm a big Jay Wright fan, I really like his spread (4 out 1 in) motion.

His posts are always high/low opposite each other (if the post @ high elbow receives a pass, the opposite low post will duck in the middle of paint for post up).

They have three ways to score in his motion:

1. Post and Rip series
2. Screen and Roll
3. Drive and Space

His motion allows for so many options that depending on his personnel it can look like a dribble drive (drive & space) or they can pound it inside with the post and rip series.

I really admire Coach Calipari. He's a total class act. It's hard to put all of his quality attributes in a box, but I'll try.

1. Integrity - The guy just reeks of down home honesty. I'd even let him work on my car.
2. Loyalty - When he commits to a town and a team, he's in it for the long haul. Clearly not in it for himself.
3. Skill - One of the best bench coaches I've ever seen. Knows when to foul, when to call timeouts, how to close out 9 point leads in NC games, etc.
4. Class - This guy won't just go out and recruit some thug. His players are all above board and love their mommas. His players rarely make the police blotter.
5. Vigilance - Cal thoroughly investigates his recruiting practices to ensure there isn't even a hint of impropriety.
6. Charm - He just looks like a nice guy. A guy you'd want to bring home to meet your parents. A guy you'd want in charge of your parent's financial retirement.

I tried to hit the highlights of the glory that is John Calipari. I fear I missed some things though.

Billy Clyde because he's wicked good at pool, and can slam back Bud Light Limes like nobodies bidness.

Give me RMK.

I respect Izzo and coach K as well. Bill Self is also a personal favorite.

What does that have to do with admiring what other coaches around the country are doing?

To me you are trying to find a replacement for pearl and none of the top coaches would give tennessee a sniff. So with that said we should do all we can to keep pearl at tennessee. So what he made a mistake we all do at somepoint in our lives. But if you want to know i also like Tom Izzo.

I've realized you don't have to be the best X's and O's guy to be a great HC. If you can maximize what your strength is and hire people around who are strong at your weak areas (maybe X's and O's) you can be very successful.

Based on my limited knowledge of Cal it appears he is great at managing egos of star players, motivating guys and team building and of course networking.

Pearl isn't the best X's and O's guy either, but he is a great motivator and he knows for the most part how to get guys to buy in. He's also good at getting most of his guys to give max effort and Bruce does a great job setting stuff up after time outs.

Not at all. I just want to talk basketball. I've gotten into coaching the past year so maybe my perspective has changed a bit.

Coaching is stealing, meaning all coaches look at other successful programs to see how they do things and then adapt that to fit their own philosophy and personnel.

I saw a good quote somewhere that said, "it's not what you know, it's what your players know."

I'm partial to Ton Crean myself. I think he's about to do very big things at IU.

Can't argue Izzo either.

Admittedly I haven't looked into Crean a ton but from what I have looked at he's seem like a solid coach, that most people tend to overlook.

I have said many times that if Pearl left that our first call should be to him just to ask him if there is an amount of money that could convince him to consider Tennessee.

I think a lot of people overlook him....and they shouldn't

He doesn't seem to make a lot of noise (off the court) but seems to just keep winning.

I'm not a big zone guy but he's got a great system that is a proven winner.

Creen = the Derek Dooley of basketball!!!

and FWIW our second call should be just up the road to Brad Stevens at Butler... the guy is great!!!

I think the guy is a great coach. I'll be interested to see how they do without Hayward this year.
