A few interesting points:
Top 1% pays 34.27% of taxes
Top 10% pays 54.36% of taxes
Top 25% pays 83.88% of taxes
Top 50% pays 96.54% of taxes.
Also, the proportion of earners in the top categories peaked under the Clinton years (1997-2000). It is more evenly distributed over the last 3 years (data goes through 2003) while many would have you believe the gap is growing.
The share of taxes paid by the bottom 50% of earners has steadily dropped since 1985 to 3.5%!
Likewise the share paid by the bottom 99% has dropped from 77% to 66%!
The tax rate on the lowest 50% of earners has dropped from 4.5% under Clinton to just under 3% under Bush. For the bottom 75%, it has dropped from the mid-7's to the mid-5's.
