Based on what?
Who they beat throughout the season. If AU wins, they'll have wins over 4 ranked team, including two that finished in the top 10. Mizzou's record won't be quite as impressive, but they would have a win over the current #3. OSU's two best wins will be sitting outside the top 10. Nobody else on their schedule is even close to being ranked. And they needed a terrible spot to beat a lousy Northwestern.
I want to say FSUs SOS is ranked 68, OSU is 64.
Any argument that OSU shouldn't be there because of its schedule, should apply to FSU as well.
If we are going to accept the fact that FSU should be there, then if OSU goes undefeated, they should be as well.
Sagarin SOS rankings
...have OSU at 61, 1-0 against top 10, 2-0 against top 30
...FSU is at 66, 0-0 against top 10, 1-0 against top 30.
If these are to be believed, technically OSU has the better resume.
This FSU is great, OSU sucks is all perception. Based on objective criteria, the numbers don't lie.
Even next year it would have been flawed with this season. Bama would still make the playoffs according to most, and Auburn would have to play in a conference championship game to go, after beating bama.
I'd put in Auburn just because the SEC has proven itself over and over to be the source of the best team and its not like tOSU can really claim to be so much better. But its entirely possible we have a Winston-less FSU playing a ho hum tOSU team. Boring.
Incidentally, Bill King made an interesting point regarding next year's four team format. If this were next year, Alabama would be a lock for the top four and not have to play in the SECcg to be assured a spot in the Final Four. But Auburn, who had just beaten them, would have to win one more game to get in. Odd.
