Who was the most overrated Vol of all time?

Read here often, but seldom, if ever post. However, I just have to respond because I've always thought that for all the ballyhoo, hoopla, and admiration wasted on Condredge Holloway that he was the biggest flop I've ever seen at his position. He'd take a snap and squirrel around all over the place, usually backwards, then fumble the ball without being touched. Another trick of his was, getting into a critical down/situation and call for a time out when he had already used them all. He's my pick, justified or not! The Hound

It's gotta be a tie between Gerald Riggs and Vincent Yarborough.

Riggs couldn't make my grandmother miss in the open field and spent the first 2.5 years on the bench where he belonged. Yarborough's head (yes, he was a headcase) was bigger than 20 Big Mac's combined. (So much for being a McDonald's All-American). Talent vs. laziness......Laziness won out.

Jabari Davis, Mr. Georgia Football who told Georgia fans he didn't want to go to Georgia because he didn't want to go to the Peach Bowl. To the delight of UG-Aly fans he got us there.

Cedric Houston should probably be mentioned too. He had a pretty good senior year, but he never really was the dynamic feature back that he was supposed to be.

Scott Galyon...

If the guy was within 10 yards of a tackle that was made, he got credit for it.

My brother and I come up with a new phrase for when a defender jumps on a pile and gets the credit, a Scott Galyon tackle.

Other than him, I would go with Brian Darden, Constantine Ritzman, Dustin Moore, Gerald Riggs, Maurice Staley, and Benji Shuler.

But my overrated Vol selection would be Munoz...This kid sat out most of a Vandy game, the entire KY game, didnt dress for the SECCG or the Cotton Bowl. His injury, he had played with over and over...He wanted to protect his draft stock and we all know where that went.

You beat me to it! I'd put James Banks on that list also...he coulda had a great career but he chose to be an idiot instead.

true...it was like having The Beaver on the roster when you recruited Wally.

I think Omar Gaither is somewhat overratted.

Jabari Davis was mega-overrated. He weighed like 500 lbs. but was the worst short yardage back ever. His yards per carry must have been like 0.1. In his defense, though, it was rather obvious to the defense that during his senior year whenever we put him in he was going to run it up the middle.

Also, I don't think Gerald Riggs was overrated. He played great his junior year and played OK his senior year behind an O-Line that couldn't run-block very well. I always thought he should have gotten more carries in his early years, when J-train was stinking it up and Cedric Houston was mediocre. I don't understand how Riggs managed to get into Fulmer's doghouse when a less-talented jerk like Toheina kept getting on the field despite disrespecting his coaches.

Hey, I thought of another one! What about "all world", large mouth (not the fish, bass type) linebacker Steve Kiner. He's the one for you younger folks, that shot his mouth off to the tune of, "Some people don't know the difference in a race horse and a jack ass", when questioned about Ole Siss possibly being a dark horse in the SEC. I watched him laying on his back all day the weekend after that statement in Jackson, MS as Ole Siss whipped the then 3rd ranked Vols 38-0. He went to Dallas and warmed the bench there a while and I think he may have opened his mouth and fell in and vanished, never to be heard of again. He's certainly a fine candidate for the overrated award. The Hound

I was always dissapointed with Leonard Scott and his hands of stone. K.W. also gets a vote.

Kiner played with Jack "Hacksaw" Reynolds. The best two LB combo fo UT until Wilson/R. Thompson.
P.S. Reynolds was much underrated and very mean.

I agree. I never saw the "Speedster" side in Leonard Scott and Kelly Washington was ok in 2001 but then he just sort of fell apart in 2002.

Don't recall mentioning Reynolds in my post, and as I look back at it I still fail to see Reynolds' name in it anywhere. So, if your point is that because Kiner played with Reynolds he should have exclusion rights to shoot his mouth off and fire up a team that would most likely not have beaten UT, well I disagree. And if Kiner wasn't on his back most of that afternoon I referred to then I must be blind too. Just stating facts. I've been a fan of UT for 55+ years and needless to say Kiner never did squat in the pros as I stated and because of that and his mouth I have nominated him for the coveted overrated award, like it or not. Mr. Hound to you!

Sorry to offend you, Dog. Steve Kiner played when I was a student. He was a great college linebacker. Just because he popped off and called Ole Miss a bunch of mules and they beat us 38-0 and knocked us out of the Orange Bowl and possibly the NC doesn't diminish his talents. My point was that Reynolds was the better of the two though Kiner was the consensus All American.

P.S. Don't forget who was the QB on the Ole Miss team, Archie Manning. I suspect that may have had a lot to do with the loss which was a sad day in UT football history. I got over it. Sounds like you haven"t. :hi:

Alright, I'll go along with you in some aspects. Through those years my pet peeve was allowing the players to pop off to the press. The coaches were bad about that, I thought. Yes, you are correct in that I haven't gotten over it. It was stupid. As far as how good he was, look at what the thread says. "Who was the most overrated Vol of all time?" Not who was the most overrated "college" player or whatever. I stated that he warmed the bench in Dallas for a while, and he did. I added a chuckle after that, maybe I shouldn't have. End results, was he a great linebacker, no. I stand by my statements to the thread question. No ill feelings, I assure you! The Dog (if u please)

Welcome aboard. Good to have someone other than myself and Oldvol (who sometimes sees everything thru orange tinted glasses) to reflect on players or events more than a few years ago!

Best I remember he was a 2 time All-American at Tennessee. How can that be over rated. He didn't do well at Dallas but drugs were involved. At UT he was a stud even with the mouth about Ol-Miss......Dardin gets my vote....or O.J. Owens

I initially threw out Darden but Owens would be another good nomination. What was his problem, they constantly mentioned him as a DB but did he even play special teams?

you all have good ones but I have to give it to C.J. Leake. I wanted to choke him this year when I seen him on the Florida sidelines.
