Except for the INT against Nortre Dame with a wide open Alvin Harper in the endzone. Plus the stinkup against Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl. Not to mention taking a sack on fourth down in the final seconds in the attempted comeback against Bama in Legion field when he was a soph.(Why would anyone take a sack on 4th down?). :banghead:(jayisavol @ Jan 21 said:my alltime favoritek:

This is, afterall, a Tennessee fan site. Why would posting the accomplishments of the QB who holds more records than any other QB in Vol history be considered a bad thing?
In response to the original poster's comments comparing Martin to Manning a list of Manning's accomplishments seemed reasonable.
Why do his accomplishments annoy you? I'd really like to hear. Manningites; that's a strange thing for a Vol fan to say.

Your respose is a perfect example of the phenomenon I'm describing. Nowhere in the initial post is there a comparison between Manning and Martin. The poster is simply making a valid point as to how overlooked he believes Tee was. Immediately, you took that as an affront to Saint Peyton and launched into an irrelevant, voluminous statistical thome. There is a considerable portion of the UT fan base who act as if we should all fall to our knees at the altar of Manning. I, on the other hand, tend to think he is just one in a long line of Tennessee greats. Our fan's behavior after the '97 Heisman vote still irks me. I'm a born and raised Tennessean, with an undergrad and a law degree from UT and I would have voted for Charles Woodson. Our fans acted as if the Heisman voters had conspired with Bruno Haupman to kill the the Lindbergh baby. The entire furor made us look like a bunch of provincial rubes. The Manningites blaming everyone but Peyton for the Colts inability to win, or for that matter even reach, a Super Bowl is another source of bemusement. I'm pretty sure Tennesse did play football before Manning arrived in Knoxville, but, after reading the work of many of those on this board, I'm not so sure anymore. No player in Tennessee history has ever received such a disproportionate amount of credit for his team's success, while being immune from blame for team failures.(OldVol @ Jan 21 said:I'd be interested in hearing what you have against Manning.

Don't you realize that by having been in Manning's presence, the '98 team was enured with powers beyond the comprehension of the non-Manningites?(Volman1970 @ Jan 21 said:So if i put them in the same sentence means i was saying Manning was overrated. I don't think so . This is a underrated post. Maybe i should start a new post on why people are so quick to defend Manning for everything good the Vols have done after he left.

Please reference any portion of the initial post in question that shows any comparison between Martin and Manning.(OldVol @ Jan 21 said:There was a comparison made in the initial post. It might aid your argument, in your mind, to ignore the obvious, but it was not just inferred, it was stated.
You can believe what you wish about the 97 Heisman, I couldn't care less. I also couldn't disagree more. It also doesn't bother me how the outcry affected you. That's just your opinion. That you are capable of being a Vol fan and have negative feelings about them too doesn't make you any wiser or nobler than those of us who choose to look on the positive side. It is, after all, only a game. I don't think you'll be elevated intellectually because you feel you're so objective.
(Volman1970 @ Jan 21 said:Thanks Hatevols96 for being the only one who didn't think i was comparing them.. For a person to go out of his way to go hunt and find everything great on Manning has to much time on his hand(even typed it to)We all knew people are judged on how namy CHAMPIONSHIPS they win. Some probably don't .Manning could go on and throw for 150,000 yards 800 td's and not win a ring but if Brady win 7 RINGS i will say Brady is the best.
(jessiej86 @ Jan 22 said:Why do people judge quaterbacks on number of rings? You don't hear the same for other positions. Besides, with this mentality, you are saying that Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Doug Williams, Jim Plunkett, etc. were better than Jim Kelly, Dan Marino, and to this point, Peyton Manning. I just find this comparison silly. Teams are judged by championships not Players, unless of course you are talking individual sports(eg. tennis, golf, boxing).
