One of the official sponsors for Perry's rally is a fellow named John Benefiel . He heads the Heartland Apostolic Reformation Network and has announced that he wants to change the name of the District of Columbia to the "District of Christ." He argues that the district was originally named after Columbia, and is therefore run by pagans.

He claims that the statute of Columbia atop the capitol building causes lawmakers to "go crazy" when they get up there (how ironic).

He also says that the Statute of Liberty is a "demonic idol."

The article says he was an official "endorser" of the Prayer rally. It does not say he was a sponsor (implying financial support).

Do we know if there is any connection? Did Perry seek him out or did he volunteer and endorsement of this large, religious event?

Funny, other lefty blogs are referring to him as a Perry "ally". At this point we know nothing about the relationship other than he endorsed the rally

Is there a qualitative difference in how close Ayers was with Obama and how close this guy is to Perry?

Looks to be a reasonable comparison. Depending on your political views you will either make a big deal about it or explain it away.

Without knowing more about Perry's associate, I'd say that the difference is rather significant. Ayers was a member of a domestic terrorist organization. Obama was encouraged to enter into politics by Ayers. Their relationship is much closer than mere acquaintances.
