so who would it be, if Coach Phil left this week, what head coach already in NCAA Div 1-A would we take if every coach in the country were available?

i really cant think of someone who i'd rather have than Coach Phil, but if he left, I'd put in my vote for Walt Weiss....

butch davis would be my choice. proven winner and recruiter. works hard, failed in the nfl looking for redemption. carrol from usc would be my choice if we could have any coach we wanted, but he is going nowhere.

If we are going only for current NCAA D-1 coaches I vote for Karl Dorrell. He is young and relates to the youth. I am sure he could match CPF's recruiting skills. Also, he is geared towards offensive production vs. the sluggin' it out in the trenches style that CPF favors. Overall, I think he would be a good fit for UT but I doubt he would ever willingly leave UCLA.

Now, there will probably be several NFL head coaches looking for jobs at the year's end. I'm not sure that he will be available but if Brian Billick is cut loose I say we go after him.

Maybe as OC, not HC...

Norm Chow would be my 1st choice as HC though...

But picking from current NCAA coaches...Frank Beamer. His teams always play solidly. they don't do too many stupid things, and they play hard. And you never hear about Va Tech being in the top 5 of recruiting boards...

He's a great coach.

Frank beamer would never leave VT. I can't see us getting a Ncaa coach if fulmer left (which aint happening and i hope doesnt happen). Go with norm chow, Then we could make things happen on offense.

I predict that CPF stays for five more years, brings in a whole boatload of assistants, and wins another NC!!!!!!!

If Phil were to leave I'd hope John Chavis would at least get a chance at HC. He has earned it and deserves a good look.

As far as the unrealistic "what if" scenario, Charlie Weiss would be good to have, maybe Pete Carroll or how about Mac Brown? Texas keeps stealing our logos so why don't we steal their coach.

Interesting list, but i question having Mack Brown on it? He IS phil fulmer...he had OK, we had UF, he's got V Yound, we had P. Manning...the guy's a joke, never even won his conf!

And tommy Bowden? ugh, trust me, he ain't the guy. Clemson is as sloppy a team as you'll find.

Beamer should be way up on the list...his team's always play sound football, don't turnover the ball, play very good defense, and the offense is nothing to sneeze at either...Lloyd Carr, he suffers the same affliction Fulmer does as well, though he does compete with his arch rival and owns a winning record agains OSU, which is huge up there.

We dont need a new HC. we need an offensive coordinator that understands and implements an offensive philosophy other than the same telegraphed offensive plays we run every year. Im not saying to get rid of them... but we need to shake things up a bit, turn it up a notch.. whatever clliche you choose. If in watching the game you can tell by personnel and formation what is coming and the probablitliy of run to pass then how do you think the defenses are going to prepare each week for us. But it also helps to catch passes, protect the ball, and use your brain. Stick with one QB and allow him to develop... EA needs to be developed with the ability to make mistakes in practice and learn from those in the games withouth worrying about being pulled... Clausen has proven his leadership even though his athletic ability is not as high.. he shows effort and uses his head. EA needs more time...hes got a cannon of an arm.. he can use his feet. etc....Norm Chow would be a great OC but sounds like he wants the challenge of NFL.

go VOLS.
