Just got a quote for 5 bedroom windows - nothing special - almost $7000. This is from a Champion type company and comparable quality.

Years ago got a quote and price was about a grand a window.

Why are they so expensive?

I'm sticking with what I got...

I got several quotes when I got windows for my entire house several years ago. Champion was one of the most expensive.

Because it's a pane in the glass to replace them.

Independent contractor!
My windows were due 10-15. Supply problems. Now 11-19. Get low e/argon.

They make replacement windows that are made to do yourself these days. My 72 year old dad is doing his own house. It takes him about a day to do one window, and he's had triple bypass. Look into it.

Because they are custom instead of standard size. If Henry Ford taught us anything it is the economy of standardization.

We got a quote last year to replace all 16 windows in the house. About $4500. Double pane, nothing fancy. We opted not to do it at the time.

I would suggest getting a quote on labor alone and pricing the windows yourself from a wholesaler or even from the factory (some still do that).

Many of these contractors are charging a boatload for the windows themselves……..and why not most of us have no idea how much they “should” cost.

Some shady folks will simply jack up the price on their labor; however some will charge a normal rate and you could save quite a bit.

Ten years ago, Champion did 11 non-standard window replacements for ~$7800. This year, they wanted $3000+ to do the final three of my house. I payed it so that I could apply myself to other things. I’ve replaced windows myself at prior residences. I could have ordered the custom sizes required for my current pre-Star Trek modern 60s ranch and done the replacement myself, but I elected to pay the contractors instead. Look honey, 11 new windows in a day. Meanwhile, how do you like the way I re-landscaped the hill in front? She was pleased.

I understand the custom issue - the house was built in the 50s before I was born so I was unable to give input on the window sizing.

That said, it's still nuts to me that building a window and installing it is over $1K

I believe I'll live with the ones I have...

This just comes down to math. They can crank out standard size vinyl windows on a line, for these custom jobs they have to do those on a different line that requires more hand fitting. So in the time it takes to make one of these windows they could make two or three standard ones. The price isn’t going to go down, if you want to do it might as well bite the bullet.

Zen Windows. They are awesome. I had gotten 3 quotes from Andersen, Pella and a local company and they were all near $10K to replace 6 windows (2 were custom sizes). I just stumbled upon Zen Windows and got the same quality with a better R value than the big names. $3500. Great experience and i can't recommend them highly enough. They are only in certain areas. I don't know if they are in yours, but it wouldn't hurt to give them a call.
