For all sports, in many threads posters share that refs, media, the power brokers hate UT and do everything they can to keep us from ‘moving on’ and having success. If this is true, my question is why? If it’s about money, don’t our fans travel well and viewership is high when we play? Are they jealous of us? Do they think we are a bunch of illiterate hillbillies? Are they still offended because we didn’t want Schiano? What is the reason we are so hated and disrespected?

We are not hated. Never have been. It's an excuse when we lose or something doesn't go our way. They have this delusion that the league office/media and refs are out to get UT

Go to any teams message board and you will see the same BS in some form

Every team’s fans think the world is out to get them. We are no different than anybody else. You should live in the Memphis area and have to listen to Tigger fans. Inferiority complex along with delusions of grandeur. Bad combination. Almost schizophrenic.

I actually think we’re a little extra.

No body hates us....well, until we win March Madness and another baseball natty....so not for a few months anyways!
They are jelli of our spirit.

On Friday at basketball game, was pointing out to one of the few longhorn fans.

Look at the names on the plaque at the Alamo...bunch of Tennessee Volunteer spirit right there.

Specifically with respect to the Heisman and Schiano Sunday, I kind of agree with that.

I don't think there has been some kind of conspiracy over the years to deny a Vol that trophy, but I understand why some people are salty about it. Tennessee is far and away the best football program that doesn't have a Heisman winner, and we should have 2. I also understand the saltiness at Dan Wolken specifically over Schiano Sunday. Him reaching out unsolicited to Currie and going "Hey, great hire man, sure I can help with the PR" then writing a column sanctimoniously going after the fan reaction to the hire is just nuts.

I agree. I wasn’t a fan of the Schiano Sunday thing, at least not the part where we accuse of him enabling the actions of Sandusky. If you’re gonna go that far, you better be damn sure of what you’re accusing someone of.

People get a little too wrapped up into this idea that officials are always out to screw us. I don’t buy into that at all. I do think some schools/coaches get the benefit of the doubt a lot of times, but overall I don’t think there’s some grand conspiracy to f us over . As far as Wolken goes, he’s just a clown. Like so many sports journalists who think they’re above sports journalism, he wants to matter so much in something other than college football. It’s obvious on social media and in his articles that he likes to make his thoughts on political topics known and interject them into whatever the flavor the day may be. He should just cover international under 17 mixed doubles and I think he would be much more in his wheelhouse.

With Schiano Sunday I agreed with the ultimate opinion (i.e., he wasn't a good fit for this job), but the argument was disingenuous. If Gruden or some other coach that the fanbase really wanted had the identical "smoke" around them (and it is a big stretch to even call it smoke), it would have been not even brought up or excused. Not 100% of our fanbase was pushing the Sandusky angle, but a lot of them were. I wish more of our fans just went with the "he's not a good coach" angle. My feeling is that the people pushing the Sandusky stuff knew "...but he isn't good enough for UT!!!" isn't very convincing and comes off like a spoiled toddler throwing a tantrum, so they had to add something to it.

Every school, and I mean every school (even blue bloods) thinks officials are out to get them. If I had a dollar for every time I have heard an Alabama football fan or UK basketball fan say that officials are biased against them, I'd be pretty wealthy. Even though it makes no logical sense. If officials do have a consistent bias, wouldn't it be in favor of very popular, blue blood programs like that? You really think that the SEC wants Alabama to lose to Ole Miss in football? They know where their bread is buttered. If a systematic bias exists, it would exist in UT's favor, at least most of the time.

The Wolken exchange with Currie laid bare the chummy at best and corrupt at worst relationships between the media and the entities they cover. The exact same thing goes on in media coverage of topics that actually are important, like politics.

The most annoying thing about game threads is those who never stop saying "the refs are out to get us..." and they're surly when you question them about it.

I've spent time at Ohio State and they're the same way as many of our fans and incredibly annoying with the "us against everyone" mentality. They are the absolute worst fanbase to deal with because they think EVERYONE hates them.

It's a self fulfilling prophecy. Have a chip on your shoulder and a persecution complex and yeah..... eventually everyone will hate you.

“We’re” being the fans, I agree. Both positively and negatively imo. Blind support and will go all out at games. Also have no qualms being overly cocky and pushing the limits like we blame UGA, UF, and so many other fans for. That said, I’ve never seen any fanbase treat an opposing fan base like we were treated coming out the horseshoe. But I do know our fans have rubbed other fanbases the wrong way. I get a lot of heat on this board when I bring it up, but it doesn’t make it any less true

It started whenever we added the 'WOOOOO' in Rocky Top.

When was that?

About 30-ish years ago.

Coach Majors didn't tolerate any wooing

I agree, and I should’ve added that it really is a double edged sword. We love the Vols and we show up anywhere and everywhere. Tennessee is one of the few places where I feel there are not sports of convenience . Football is definitely the top of the totem pole, but we show up in droves for everything. If we go to the final 4 there is no doubt who will have the most fans.

It is 'The Volunteer Spirit'.

Last summer, the people of Omaha were most puzzled by that spirit
